In commercial carrying days on that section it would have been a different matter of course, they would have had to get their finger out but nowadays in the overall scheme of things it will be 'only' leisure boaters put to the trouble/danger of trying to avoid that bit. The issue which demands priority and immediate attention is the potential, and as yet unknown, danger to road traffic using the other lift bridges of the same design at Barnby Dun and along the New Junction, all of which should be closed to both road and canal traffic until they've been given the OK with regard to at least the condition of the end fittings on the counterweight beam hanger bars. True, but what I was saying is that as no commercial boats pass that way any longer they will not see any great rush to get that particular bridge fixed nor will they be getting any pressure from commercial carriers to do so, it's 'only' leisure boaters who are being put out.

Do fb have a lot of vans running around ? No but it seems in fashion to blame them for all the ills of the world at the moment. Lift bridges don't earn money.

From here: www.iims.org.uk/what-future-for-freight-on-the-uk-canal-network/"Potential traffics: As CRT’s Jon Horsfall points out to Canal Boat, the A&C Main Line runs for something like 40 miles parallel to the congested M62 and overloaded railway lines. There is sea freight from the Humber in both directions." "So when will we see actual cargo carried? Jon Horsfall tells Canal Boat that the first new traffic could be no more than 12 months away. Time will tell if this is the start of a revival of freight on the north eastern waterways." I find it ironic, even somewhat nauseating, that such remarks should come from a man who has devoted the last few years of his working life to ensuring that the Aire & Calder became ever more 'unfit for purpose' with regard to carrying any viable commercial traffic at all.

Whitakers obviously didn't think so !

Whitakers obviously didn't think so ! I suspect it might be only because the traffic congestion around Rotherham is awful. It would certainly be better if they could carry a full load though

Latest on Wykewell End Lift Bridge :
There are two temporary link fittings being made to attach the chain blocks, which are presently doing the job of the hanger bar with the broken bottom eye fitting and rigged with webbing slings, directly to the top pivot pin on the counterweight beam and the lower pin on the side of the bridge deck.
If things go according to plan from today on, the temporary links and the chain blocks should be in place and rigged up by Saturday evening, and the bridge should be re-opened to canal traffic under C&RT staff supervision on Sunday.

Well that is a bit of good news! (if all goes according to plan, that is).

CRT have updated the notice and confirmed Tony's comment.
I shall be ready and waiting Sunday morning.

Are we allowed to ask why you are rushing to Leeds - what job you will be doing there? And will you be using the boat as a residence?

Are we allowed to ask why you are rushing to Leeds - what job you will be doing there? And will you be using the boat as a residence? I have been reliably informed by some of my colleagues at MI4 that he is spearheading a Boaters' Coup to take over the CRT Leeds Batallion by force. You heard it here first. He is a leader. Where Welly goes many will follow and countless other CBA type boaters will thank him for his endless and selfless dedication to the cause. His chief technical adviser is secret as is the Mackenzie friend legal rep. News outlets have been primed. Obviously this is all very hush hush at this point so no facebook or twitter nattering.

I started my new job start of last week (I'm a software developer) and while I work remotely and could potentially work from anywhere, it's a new job and didn't want any issues or uncertainty with being able to work - ie. being stuck in the middle of nowhere with no internet access that I need for the job. And yeah, I'll be using the boat as residence! (I've been using it as residence for two years now, had a different boat before this one).
