The adverts on TV etc enc people to have the latest technology/I phone etc...the massive production of all these 'must haves' is damaging to our planet. I don't update my phone until it breaks..it limps on. These new phones not designed to last, nor are washing machines etc. Its scary when you look back and 'see' what we've done to our planet over the last 50 or so years ..it'll take decades to recover but only if there is unified effort and recognition.

This is something which really annoys me. I have never bought a new phone or computer or tablet. I'm perfectly happy with older stuff as it does what I need to do. Current Laptop 2013 phone 2015 tablet 2016 all second hand and cheap as chips as were previous devices. The greed driven IT system is based on obsolescence and ever bigger more power and data hungry software. The especially sad thing about this is that humans will eventually make themselves obselete then the money will start shouting, never mind talking. Mind you if we do get proper autonomous products like cars (25 years away in reality if you ignore the salesmen ) then maybe people could do more enjoyable things but that would rely on the others who are getting the massive profits sharing a bit of the money. They will have to do that otherwise there are no profits. Silly situation. The starting sequence of Terminator looks quite prescient bearing in mind it was 35 years ago! I’ve gone back to the old way of actually talking to people as it’s more enjoyable. CW ? and no bug keys?

Tx a bit quicker than Rx. Fldigi software will Rx and Tx CW for you, but again, the fun is in doing it yourself. I suppose the point of CW is that you can make some form of contact still when conditions aren’t good enough for phone (voice). Getting back on point again, I think it’s that pendulum thing again. I think we have become too reliant on technology and it needs to swing back a bit so that we don’t bugger up the planet. When you look at the Flightradar24 app and see how many planes there are up in the sky every day, it seems that would be a good starting point. How many of these flights are really critical?

To the cry of "We're destroying the earth" my reply is "nuts". To the cry of "We're destroying our civilisation" then my reply is "probably"
Destroying the earth is something that the cosmos has tried a few times over the last 4 billion years and so far has failed, The human race for all it's technology does not have that amount of destructive force available to it.
The human race has already survived three (possibly several more) extinction events in our few hundred thousand year existence. All of which had major effect on human numbers but because of the very attributes (that make us now a danger to ourselves), we survived.
In fact our main problem is that we survived too well and our numbers have increased beyond the capability of a self sustaining environment to support us.
The answers are obvious to everyone, at least to those of us who think about it but lets be honest, because of the basic selfishness of humans (it is a survival trait from the past) It ain't gonna happen.
If nothing is done then we will (possibly but it's far from a certainty) have huge rises in sea levels and temperatures maybe wiping out 60 or 70% of the human race. That still leaves a lot of humans alive ..... civilisation, if it survives at all would be very different.
Of course this all supposes that in the mean time, the cosmos doesn't decide to throw another curved ball and the next "string of pearls" hits earth instead of Jupiter. (there is strengthening evidence, although not conclusive, that this has happened a few times in the comparatively recent past)
Or of course the modern equivalent of the Justinian Plague and the Black Death may be brewing somewhere in the world (If you want to give yourselves a scare read up on the plagues of the past there are dozens of them going back to the beginning of written records.
We are familiar with the Black Death but that was only one of many, in fact it is now thought that it was only a repeat performance of the Justinan Plague from a few centuries earlier
If the human race is fit to survive ..... it will, if it isn't, it won't ....... "better drowned if duffers if not duffers won't drown"

Well yes, the rock may still be around after we make ourselves extinct. However we have already managed to make large numbers of wildlife extinct as a result of our actions. Millions of people are also dying or suffering around the world as a result of the selfish actions of others. It doesn’t make it right.
The cruel thing is that a large number of the humans who will suffer during the extinction phase won’t have contributed much to the catastrophe. Most (if any) who survive will probably be the ones who contributed most to the catastrophe.
We still have a chance to save ourselves but everyone needs to change their lifestyle, especially those who only chase money. I don’t buy the ‘we’re all gonna die anyway, so what’s the point’? argument.

Autonomous is a scam to sell cars. Tesla bloke says they will be fully self driving in a year this won't happen. It can't happen as there are too many variables. He simply says this and implies the vehicle will be worth more when updated with new software. Its sales patter and scammy to imply to customers that the vehicles are going to increase in value because they are not. Autonomous boats are just as impossible.

Its exactly these type of high consumers that protesters should be hassling not everyday folk. The problem is people are so overawed by celebrity they fall over themselves in admiration even if that person has just flown 5000 miles in a jetliner to go to a protest about people using less planes for example.
A real giggle.
Why don't they go and agitate people in multimillion pound apartment areas? Are the private security men too scary?

Autonomous boats are just as impossible. ...and will probably be impassable with so many braking down due to ‘sensor’ failures. Already we have a situation where car faults are often the sensors rather than the the thing they are trying to sense. Autonomous cars are going to have a large array of fail safe sensors, so more cars broken down blocking arteriel routes during the rush hour. What could possibly go wrong?

I’m sure billionaires look down at us all from their ivory towers and piss themselves laughing at how stupid we all are.

Bring it on. Moved yesterday and somehow damaged my back, even wiping me bum is painful on the back. Automated Mutt walkers would be helpful today! What you need is an robotic dog. You could program it to wipe your bum.
