Coots are the skinheads of the waterways.

Is Jenlyn a mod or something. Not just an occasional poster? Don't mind him, post wherever you want.

Outsiders looking in might expect there to be much more about monitoring batteries. On the other hand, they may be amused to see how threads wander. I read another discussion site where there is usually wanderings away from the original subject, but the original subject can be brought back at any time, and no-one minds, a bit like TB. But I suppose there should be threads which are serious from beginning to end, also.

Is Jenlyn a mod or something. Not just an occasional poster? Don't mind him, post wherever you want. Nothing to do with being a mod. It's down to a bit of self moderation, knowing when it's just not necessary to wreck a thread with twattish rubbish. I know you may struggle with understanding this, but it's in everyones interests to not spoil every thread just because the ability to do so is available. I'm sure it wouldn't be appropriate for me to start posting man utd's debacles in the rugby thread.

Here's one empty cage, we've just been and gotten new-old palettes to replace those that have been under the logs for 7 years and were looking somewhat saggy. Handy to get them home by bus

Up here on the Macc moorhens seem to have taken over from coots. More and more each year. Pretty cleaver are coots, I fed one and its chicks last year. Stopped at the same place 3 months later it was straight over, into my kayak, its feeding station. They have a good memory, probably better than mine.
No goslings yet but the father geese patrolling the canal near the nest are in full aggression mode now. Most attacks when I'm in my kayak start with a nodding head, then head down charge which stops just before my kayak. I think they know, when I wave my paddle in front of them, that they are going to get 'fended off' if they come any closer. One excelled itself though, took off near the kayak and flapped around above my head, kissing insanely. A quick poke with my paddle saw it off. Funny are canada geese, they don't bother with my boat when cruising but attack the kayak I drag behind it. I guess it must be a huge predatory goose in their little brains.

Coots seem to be disappearing fast. We used to see lots ont he Kennet near Reading - I haven't seen any for years now.
We went on holiday for a week on the Broads three weeks ago and travelled from Wroxham to Norwich and all the way up the River Ant. I didn't see a single coots There use to be thousands, probably the most commom birds around. As a matter of fact there were very few water fowl there at all. The Marsh Harrier population looks heathy though.
It's quite odd, because on the face of it, coots should do well. They seem to be much better parents than ducks and their sharp beak and general aggression seems to equip them to defend their young against predators.

I'll tell you what is terrifying and that's heading along the river when a mob of swans start running along the water and take of right in front of you. This happened to us while in my dinghy, Chris swiftly put up her big brolly and crouched behind it whereas I just had to duck down behind her while clinging onto the tiller of the outboard. I felt the breeze as one passed too close for comfort. Phil
