My girlfriend once said "kiss me where it smells". So I took her to Birmingham.

Brentford is, of course, where the action is for boating on the Grand Union. It has also been used for location filming for many decades in many films and TV series, for both gritty waterfront seediness and for Georgian elegance. Developers Ballymore have started in earnest on levelling between High Street and river, and are taking to heart the message that the location has value because of the riverside and history (even if that is largely lip-service). So keen are they to promote the idea that they have the waterways at the heart of their thinking, that they have put up giant posters which confront you on entering Brentford from the rail station β looming large on the left, as a celebration of colourful local narrowboats, is the very boat they illegally evicted from my boatyard when clearing that out, and which figured in all the years of BW and CaRT legal efforts to remove it from the waterways altogether! Bit of a turn-around. I showed this photo to Gilly this evening, and she was simultaneously thrilled and indignant (no-one asked her if her boat could be used as the frontispiece of Brentford!) - There is something curiously 'karmic' about this, which I cannot quite put my finger on, and am not altogether sure how I feel about it. Mostly, I had to laugh.

Can she ask for payment from Ballymore? And if they say no, then pull the red hot mooring pins out of her handbag.

Can she ask for payment from Ballymore? And if they say no, then pull the red hot mooring pins out of her handbag. You obviously share a similar mindset with Gilly; she is hopping up and down indignantly, insisting that I at least ask for her! Personally, I rather think that the irony of the situation works in our favour more than otherwise; Ballymore and I need to work co-operatively during the ensuing few years of work, and I am still plugging for them to supply some form of small boat dry-docking within Workhouse Dock.
