So it looks like we will fall foul of the overnight locking of locks 88- 89 after Wigan Jn. As far as I can tell Poolstock locks are no longer being locked.
the question is, should we stop short of Poolstock anyway, or is there somewhere safe to moor between Poolstock and Pagefield lock (88). Wigan has a bad reputation but I haven’t been there since 1974. We don’t want any stress tonight!

2 years ago we stopped on the towpath side of the big pond, above the 2 Poolstock locks. No problem, dead quiet. There is a factory opposite where the workers pop out for their fags (!) - so just push the boat over to their side if Mummy's Little Darlings turn up.
We've been in & around Wigan, and have nothing bad to say about it.

I'd stop at Dover Lock Inn which is about 2 hrs from Wigan. We did that as we didn't fancy stopping in Wigan overnight.I'm sure many folk will say it's fine, but we didn't fancy it.The best bit about Wigan,is getting through it. PS-We're now at Parbold,we are ahead of ourselves if you get my meaning.

What rubbish. Dover Lock is a right slummy tip. There's a Wetherspoons (Moon Under Water) in Wigan - £5.40 Large Full English.

Im there now, waters very low, I’d go down the lock with the BW services and moor on that section towards the drydock, theres a few local boats moored there now so. You should be fine👍 Local Wigan pisspot, complete with blue bag of special brews, out early watching the locks🍻 The actual Wigan Pier

Wigan was okay when we stayed overnight last year in the pound by the dry dock below lock 86 (as Andyberg says). We quite enjoyed a wander round town too, but it's quite earthy Rog

Thanks all. To be honest, what with our bad night and early start, I think we’ll stop before Poolstock Lock. Which is about an hour or less away. But early for us, but we still have 2 days to reach Litherland so should be OK.

Pity you had a bad night and can't get to Crooke by the pub. That's a good spot, but too far for you ... maybe on the return.

This year I've moored opposite Wigan dry dock, at Parbold, at the Dover Lock (which is no longer trading as an inn) and haven't had a problem at any of them.
