Next trip will be onto the Ashby Canal, I haven't ever been on it, and it's ideal because my gf can only get limited time off work, to the end and back is only about three days from our mooring. Are there any "must see" sights along the way, any recommended pubs, places to visit etc?

That area is one I have yet to visit. Many years ago I was on the Birmingham and Fazely to Tamworth and a couple of times dropped down from the Trent and Mersey down to Hopwas about 5 years ago. I Have never managed the rest of the Coventry (or the Oxford come to that)......maybe next year, as this summer plan on exploring the Gt Ouse and the Middle levels and possibly on to the Nene in the autumn.

She is probably humouring you lol She's even thinking about buying a boat of her own, I've suggested various other idea for holidays but she did so much air travel as a child (she's got a Junior Jet Club certificate in her study for having flown 50,000 miles with BOAC before she was ten years old, and she used to fly a lot on other airlines too) that she says she'd be quite happy if she never saw an aeroplane again. I might have persuaded her to do a trip on the Oslo-Bergen railway later in the year but for now, boating it is.

The Ashby canal was the closest I've ever come to being struck by lightning. Otherwise pleasurably unmemorable.

I have met your type before,Pearsons Guide in hand boldly venturing where no man has gone before, the other half " pretending an interest "meanwhile wishing she was on the beach in Acapulco admiring bronzed sculpted beauty, its a sad tale.

Looks to me like she's enjoying herself here. I'm sure that if she wanted to go to Acapulco she'd say. But thanks for the input anway.

No worries, the last thing she would want to do is spend a week laying on a beach, I don't mind a day or two of it on holiday but I always prefer getting away from resort areas in a hire car or on a train as much as possible.
From other posts it seems the Ashby is fairly unremarkable compared to other canals, although chugging along in a dilatory manner through bucolic scenery is as much as we ever seem to need.

I see,the " active type " I thought your brass looked well polished. Dilatory and bucolic, beautiful adjectives and not oft used.

We liked the Ashby. It is delightfully under-used and very quiet. Shallow though!
