that is a rather daft and hypocritical thing for you to say. It doesn't make it any less true. And just how would you have dealt with those 'armed guards' at the door of a hotel in Turkey keeping you hostage? They are hardly going to shoot a British Holiday maker who was trying to leave.

Then why didn't everyone just leave the hotel?

Then why didn't everyone just leave the hotel? I don't know I wasn't there. But my guess is they were intimidated by the presence of heavies on the gates.

Apparently some people have been saving for holidays using Thomas Cook vouchers, not something I personally would do given the ease of opening an instant access savings account.
These vouchers are not covered by any sort of protection and are now worthless.

Thomas Cook Group chief executive, Dr Peter Fankhauser - he's so sorry about this that he'll be paying out from his own bank accounts.

there are various reasons why they went bust, but the fall in the value of the pound is cited as one issue. apparently the hotels do not get payment for several weeks after the guest leaves, so the money paid by the customer in January won't be enough to pay the bill that will be raised in October. one spin-off of this is that some hotels are, quite reasonably in my view, not allowing guests to leave until their bill is paid, so in effect they are being held hostage; perhaps the rescue process includes settling those bills. They would definitely get short shrift from me if they pulled that one on me. At least four security guards were seen holding the gates shut at Les Orangers and refused to let any guests leave. Security guards were keeping the hotel's gates shut, refusing to allow guests out, or let new visitors enter. "We can't leave the hotel. I'd describe it as exactly the same as being held hostage," Mr Farmer told BBC Five's Stephen Nolan Show. "They had four security guards on the gates, holding the gates closed, and were not allowing anybody to leave." He said the guards were not responding to any pleas from guests to be allowed out. They don't say anything, they just stand there holding the gates," he said. There was a gentleman from Ireland trying to talk to the security guards and say, 'Look, we want to go home, we want to go home. Can you let us out?' They just look at him and laugh and continue to hold the gate shut. Yet a gentleman from Yorkshire they'd let out in a heartbeat because he'd threaten them with 'short shrift'.

Very frightening situation for guests to be in..you don't expect that whilst on holiday.. Tis easy to mock but I think its a horrible end to any holiday... People work hard they deserve their breaks away, the fat cats always walk from these situations unscathed..

I'm with Martin on this one. Thing to do is get together a group of meatheads. Should be easy enough in trashy all inclusive hotels, Thomas Cook specialised in these. Meatheads warn 'security' that they are breaking the law by holding them hostage for payments that have nothing to do with them, that they will be leaving the premises, and that 'security' should get out of the way. If 'security' fail to heed the warning give them a good kicking, football hooligan style. That would sort it.

Here's the hotel that keeps their customers hostage. The Orangers Resort, Hammamet, Tunisia:
"I have just returned this morning from this hotel. Wild horses could not drag me back. I was on holiday with my 82 year old Dad & 26 year old Daughter. While we were here we all experienced stomach problems & couldn’t get off the toilet, this continued for the week with good and bad periods . Such a shame As this totally ruined our stay. The food wasn’t great & mainly left uncovered so the flies could settle. Totally wiped us all out for the week."
Hotel replies thus: "We were delighted to read that you were satisfied with the services of our employees as our team is always around to make sure that everythinng is up to our customer's expectations. We were sorry to read that our offered food choice was not up to your expectations as we are offering a wide variety of tasty dishes in our buffet restaurants, incl. live cooking stations (grill, pasta, pizza and WOK). In addition to that, our customers do have the possibility to dine in our a la carte restaurant on the beach (Tunisian, Asian and Italian options). In case there is anything else that our customers would like to enjoy, and it is not available in the buffet, our chefs are happy to cook individually (if items are available)."
Another happy customer says: "Guests that were returning to this place confirmed that the place has gone downhill rapidly. The top topic of conversation between guests was how bad their squirts are. I managed to return from a week’s all inclusive over 2kg lighter than when I left and this is the first ever holiday I’ve ever suffered with stomach problems. I only ate food from the hotel and drank bottled drinks so they can’t blame anyone else. The lack of a tips box meant that the waiting staff was handling filthy dinars (some of the notes are really disgusting) and then peoples cutlery and glasses without washing their hands."

I see they phoned the media and not atol who would inform them they will still be informed.
You would be really annoyed if you were staying there and couldn't get out for the day.
