200 year old Tarmac?
Another big failure like the middlewich branch one would be quite handy for some people.

one hopes the senior engineer is right and there is nowt to worry about Now, why does that do nothing to reassure me? The news article linked to in post #1 reads as if C&RT are concentrating on the effect instead of the cause, and looking in the wrong place, . . as the stupid sods generally do ! Those cracks in the asphalt on the towpath are indicative of recent slight movement of a large mass of previously stable earth, . . in other words, the steeply sloped outer face of that embankment. They should be, and should have been, checking for signs of constantly waterlogged ground caused by leakage through the canal bed slightly above and all along the base of the embankment at the edge of the road that runs along below and by the side of it by poking about with a four foot length of half inch steel rod to see how far into the ground it can be easily pushed, . . not farting about with modern high-tech gadgets intended for measuring tiny amounts of movement and/or subsidence in buildings or similar structures.

The tarmac surface looks new, so if it was laid directly on top of an existing broken surface that has no foundations to save money I’m not surprised, CRT need to be a bit more open rather than just ‘trust us’.

Of course it will be ok. CRT wouldn't have wasted money on nice new blue signs if they were about to swept away.

Just another CRT "asset" bleeding cash, quite normal, nothing bad will happen, trust Richard Parry. He knows best................doesn't he?
