Driving Jane into work early the other day and an audible alarm sounded on the car. Brief moment of mild panic and terror only to realise the car was warning me it was only 4 degrees ! Modern cars are prone to molly coddle ... very different from my early motoring experiences. My first vehicle, bought for £40, was a Ford Anglia van ... an undoubted death trap despite a current M.O.T. Every time I hit a pothole the steering would shudder violently until I pulled over and stopped ... before I could drive again. After six months I was able to progress onto the comparative luxury of a Hillman Hunter which cost £275. I did manage to drive to a scrap yard with the van Wondered if others early motoring memories would be interesting. Rog

It was - 4 degrees here this morning. Shania phoned me and said "There's something wrong with the car, there's a warning light showing some bloke having a shit". So I said "What??? Let me have a look"

My first car was a mini, in which I regularly flew over hump backed bridges, all four tyres off the ground and landing with a terrific thunk...it never missed a beat in the three years I had it! My first car was a Hillman Imp, in which I flew over a hump backed bridge (Leeds and Liverpool canal, near Rufford), and smashed the radiator.

I got my first car when I was 24 and moving to Aberdeen, for obvious reasons! It was a Saab 96V4 which me and a mate (on the same course and also moving to Aberdeen) bought between us for £150 total. A solid car but it had a few minor issues such as a cylinder head gasket was leaking. So we fixed that outside the B&B where we were staying during the last days of the course (in Redhill, Surrey). Gave it a nice new oil filter and oil change. Started it up and something bad was happening when we revved it - the metal oil filter canister was swelling. Bad shit! Transpired the oil pressure relief valve was sticking so that was dismantled and sanded down a bit, after which it was fine.
It was a good car, with column gear change (don't know why that went out of fashion) and the freewheel unit that had been put in when the cars were powered by 2-stroke engines. The freewheel added about 2mpg. I think it had done about 125,000 miles when we got it and it lasted several years, can't remember the mileage when it was disposed of. They don't make 'em like that any more!

First car I bought (in 1992 when I was 18) was a 1986 Vauxhall Nova SR 1.3. got 108 out of it on the M3. That was before gps so probably about 98mph in real life.
Flying. Real chav car that was. Nice recaro seats though.

When I retired my first car, a Renault 4, in the field of daisies as promised, I needed another car to drive back to the Pilbara, and bought an FC Holden station wagon from a mate. Some previous owner had home-converted the usual column shift to a floor shift, with no sealing at floor level – something I only discovered when first driving at speed through a flooded section of dirt road. My windscreen was instantly obscured by a fountain of mud that erupted through the gear shift, and needless to say, I was drenched as well. (Was still tarmac at the stage I took that photo)

I didn't really own a car until I was in my 40's ..I did drive my ex's and the first one we had was a ford escort that I managed to spin on a corner on a dual carriageway and ended up facing t'other way.. I liked the Escort.

Whilst compared to today's standards it's not that fast it handles like a dream and with a brand new green paint job it looks amazing. I like Escorts I've had a couple mk3/4 when i was a nipper my dad had a brand new F reg version as a company car

I liked the Escort. I managed to spin the first car I ever drove. It was my mum's 1978 Daihatsu F20 (first Japanese 4x4 in the UK). Rear wheel drive standard I turned into a slightly damp car park and slipped the clutch at the wrong time and ended up pointing the other way. Not dangerous as not on a road but quite an odd thing to happen.

I bought the Anglia van in early 1975, and the Hillman Hunter in October the same year.
I enjoyed the Hunter ... 1725cc engine and very comfortable (after the van).
I bought a Mk 1 Escort off my brother in 1978 and that was a belting car.
A mate had a 3litre Capri ... always dreamed of one but never even drove one !

My friend had a Capri 3.0S auto in the 90s. A nackered one as he never has much money. It was quite a cool car but one MoT away from the scrap man so he only had it a year. It was a late 70s one I think. I remember the noisy exhaust. Gave me a headache.
Probably be worth a few quid now if it had been kept in good order !
