If only they had built the contour canal they would still be moving goods and water around the country, great film John

Does anyone still speak like the narrator these days?

You're missing the point of your own post
opposition to infrastructure investments on big projects scuppered the contour canal which would have been a game changer
opposition to the HS2 is trying to stop another big project that could also be a game changer..
Most advanced industrial countries invest hugely in their long term future with projects that might not show a profit for decades.
Britain invests in future prospects as if the world will end in five years

Thanks for posting this good- but sad, film John, it's such a pitty that all that activity belongs to the past.
It's hard to understand why they never invested in adapting the waterways for bigger boats, as it still is the more ecological way for the transport of bulk goods (not on the narrow ditches of course), and could have reduced the amount of road haulage enormously.
Peter.

Does anyone still speak like the narrator these days? I suspect this may be fairly recent.

This popped up on my YouTube recommendation - a lost way of life like so many others 😡
Two things - the Anglia TV prelude - oh how I remember that from my childhood - ditched in 1988 according to the internet 🙃👍
Bygones - what a programme that was - often on prime time on a Sunday competing with songs of praise!

I remember those programs (not that one though)
I will watch that when I get back to the boat this afternoon (off to the drydock in a few minutes, few little repair jobs on cables, grinders etc .... as always after a biggish drydocking. bloody welders always burning the 110 leads or chopping through leads 'cos they put the grinder down before it has stopped spinning ...... but the one thing that really pisses me off is when they reach the maximum length of a cable they always believe that if you pull it hard enough you can make it reach ...... doesn't matter how much care you take over the cable clamps ..... they can still manage to pull them out )
