Sadly CRT have decided to treat everyone with a boat over 7ft wide as if they are an idiot.
I received this email
"Dear Boater,
I’m writing to you as we’ve sighted your wide beam boat on the Grand Union Canal. As you may know, the GU is one of the busiest and most popular waterways the Canal & River Trust looks after, and we want to make sure that all those who boat there are safe. Compulsory booking at Blisworth Tunnel We are reminding wide beam boat owners that it is compulsory to book passage through Blisworth Tunnel at least 48 hours in advance.
Passage is available Monday - Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) at 08:00.....
(section redacted for national security reasons)
.....Worryingly, we have received reports of wide beam boats entering the tunnel without prior booking: the consequences of this could be very dangerous. If we identify any wider craft passing through the Tunnel without a prior booking we will, wherever possible, take action against the boater owner to ensure that the safety of all boaters is protected."
----
Firstly I don't have plans to go through Blisworth and secondly I wouldn't dream of doing this in a wide vessel without making sure navigation authority were aware in advance.
Too many tossers have turned up. I'm glad my time on the ditches is coming to an end.
I expect they'll need some barriers and traffic lights to stop the idiots.
Is increase in idiots just an ageing problem or are there actually more idiots around? I'm never quite sure.

Just had exactly the same. The authors name is synonymous with stupidity. I see as well that he has a new title. Seemingly his lying over gitgate has not been an issue for the trust.
I'm not sure the issue itself even exists. I know one or two have attempted and succeeded in going through without supervision, but it's not a common problem. Anything symonds states should be taken with a pinch of salt, his history is evidence to that.

The anti widebeam mentality that is becoming common in cart, is worrying not to mention discriminative.

I think you fatties are over-reacting. The letter doesn’t accuse you of any wrongdoing, it is just a reminder of the issue. Yes it is an obvious issue, but unfortunately some fatties are so thick that for them, it isn’t an obvious issue.
I’d be pretty pissed off if I met a fatty half way through Blisworth or any other tunnel. If this letter helps to reduce the chances of that, I’m glad of it. Or perhaps your pride and sensitivity is more important?

I suggest any spare time you have should be spent on sorting your own boat out, lord knows it needs some TLC.

The fact is, it's simple enough for the trust to identify any culprits going through blisworth tunnel without supervision, by using their own monitoring system. Once the culprit-s have been identified, issue the offender-s with the notices required. Sending out a blanket email that's badly written and ill thought out just gets peoples backs up unnecessarily.
I'm afraid this is a common issue with crt management, the inability to communicate without causing more problems than it needs.

I’d still have encountered the fatty half way through the tunnel. Wait until the crime is committed, then punish the perp. Modern thinking is that prevention is better than cure - prevention by education. Seems fairly obvious to me, but your hyper sensitivity to even receiving an informative email is clearly more important to you than someone else’s boat having to reverse half the length of the tunnel. Quite a selfish attitude, when you think about it.

I mean we know that its done by some narrowboaters, its the biggest cause of leaks in lock gates, so surely an email sent to all narrowboaters would be appropiate warning of the dangers and boaters responsibiliities?

Quite a selfish attitude, when you think about it. Let's not see you run away with the facts again nick. You do realise it's not a criminal offence don't you, therefore it's not a crime. It's also not a regular occurrence. No need for your over dramatisation of what's actually happening. With the amount of signage crt regales in installing, I'm somewhat surprised that they have not installed signs informing new boaters of the rules regarding passage for wide beams at blisworth tunnel. A lot of the shit stirring regarding this comes from the trip boat guy, who often likes to tell stories, which ultimately are more often than not proved unsubstantiated. Stoke bruerne does have an issue with boats and boat owners, and one or two players nearby do like to keep that going.

That is called bolting the stable after the horse has left. You have used the word "bolt" incorrectly. "Close the stable door after the horse has bolted" is the term. When a horse "bolts" it moves rapidly away from something. Don't ask me how I know this. I have the bruises.

The chaps who make lock gates at Stanley Ferry workshop said yes, the 'John Wayne's Legs' (their term for that oval hole) in the centre of gates is caused by narrow boats going through with only one gate opening, and the side of the boat rubbing against the other. They told us ALWAYS open both gates.

The danger of going through a tunnel in a wide bean is untold.
It really is catastrophic. Imagine the damage that could be caused.
TNT is child's play compared.

Keep your eyes peeled and your camera handy, Im sure you'll be able to spot loads of lazy narrow-boaters breaking the ‘single gate rule’ to add to your ‘non licence displaying’ list to snitch up👍
