Well, let's face it, Hayes & Harlington doesn't have the best reputation. Would you admit to living there? Anyway, thinking of Eyez-Lamb, I wonder if we'll end up there for a while. Do they have room at the inn, and how honest are the local-yokels? This time next year we'll be on our way to the Fens and will have to research marinas and public transport out that way. Isleham station. Hmm... I see we're a bit late for that one.

Hayes and Harlington or as we knew it Hayes (snigger) village. Well... that was a co-incidence. I didn't know. I almost chose Southall or a suburb of Birmingham. I thought Isleham looked pretty neat, and secluded - I bet a lot goes on there. Trumpety-trump-trump-trump! All looks like a wild time!

Did you know that at one time there were 63 pubs on the road between Littleport and Mildenhall? There are none now. I'm pretty sure there are no more than 20 houses and a few business premises. The countryside there must have been teeming with people at one time to support 63 pubs, how sad it is now, huge windswept fields...
I know one of the farmers along there, he and his brother do between them what used to provide 100's of people a livelihood and lots of the time they do sod all, he's in the pub by 5 every evening and doesn't exactly bounce out of bed (I know, I used to rent a building there). The funny thing is that it costs a fortune to own, maintain and replace farm machinery so now instead of supporting farm workers they support farm machinery manufacturers and their staff, where no doubt the works of hundreds is also now performed by a few and another bunch of machines. One has to wonder what's the point? In the olden days people may have lived a poor a scant life in the countryside but it was mercifully short so good for the planet. I know the farmer in question thinks the same sometimes. Progress sweeps all before it to inevitable doom. Eventually he or his ancestors will be able to farm via computer controlled self driving machinery and just pop out if one gets stuck or something. Actually there will be technicians for that so poor old John will end up technically owning the farm and being the loosers if the crop has problems, but the people making the most money from that farm come rain or shine will be the machinery makers and fixers.
And all the time more and more humans that need something to do with their lives. Watching telly doesn't really cut it.
It's funny really how people willingly write themselves into oblivion. My last job was to standardise my well paid job so any old twat could do it for half the money. If I hadn't done that someone else would have, a fair example of self destruction.
We're doomed!

Actually you are right about the use of computers because I know some farm hands who climb in the cab with a book or a laptop to while away the time while the onboard computer takes control and trundle up and down the field controlled by the pooter and GPS making the turns at exactly the right time . Same as when Harvesting say peas, they work through the night on pooter controlled Pea Viners, they are lit up like something out of Close Encounters all through the night while the chap in the cab is snoozing.
