I changed our narrowboat's engine oil filter in July and brought the old one home as I wanted to cut it up and see what was inside! Here are pics taken this evening. After removing the filter paper I cut that in half. Bukh's filters - this one and the 2 new ones I bought (and the one now on the engine) - are made in Tunisia, despite Bukh being a Danish engine. I have been told only to use Bukh filters, as only Bukh know how they should be made to comply with the engine, such as pressure value for the release valve, and that Bukh filters do not appear in filter comparison manuals, ie. other manufacturers do not know what specifications are required to make filters for Bukh engines. goo.gl/photos/s28Z9zmNtZyRECWC8 I found this Youtube video which, although an advert for Fram, shows quite well how oil filters work:

It seems that every time I buy filters for my BMC engine, they are made by somebody different, I think my current oil filter is a Fram and the fuel filters are Champion.

I was told that the oil filter specifications were important to the engine, and that only Bukh know and order what they want. Who knows what the truth is?

Foxy, have you a part number for your filter, will cross-reference to other decent makes.
I'd be surprised if Bukh have there own dedicated filter company!
I've used nearly every brand of filter over the years, nothing gone tits up to date.
I do look for Mann stuff these days. I do Avoid Crossland, they are Indian stuff boxed up for Eurocarparts.

Here is another filter number for you - Mann W719/30 - same as used on the old 20v 1.8 VW group motor. Handy to know if you have to buy one off a spotty oik in Halfords

Gazza - you got me rummaging through my notes and the spare oil filter we still have is a Mahle KC112. This is the equivalent of the filter that was on there when we bought the boat but I forget what that was. I think I put a Wix filter (Made in Poland boo hiss!) on in Autumn 2014; in Spring 2015 engine went for renovation and a Bukh filter put on and we were told to use ONLY Bukh filters preferably, although we could stick the spare Mahle (Made in Austria) on if we wanted. We have a Bukh filter on now, and 2 spare Bukh filters which I'll put on in July 2017 & July 2018. Will save the Mahle for July 2019 (there seems to be no code for the Bukh filter)

I'm sure I've mentioned this before: there's a chain of shops runs by a religious group in this part of Finland, some kind of 'Pentecostals' - they don't sell alcohol or tobacco or condoms - but they've got absolutely nothing against making FUCKING HUGE PROFITS!! And lying - they called their stores 'Cheap Hall' (Halpahalli) - yet the prices there are, yes, here's the OUTRAGEOUS word again!
Anyway, here's an interesting thing I noted, the letters p a h a occur in the centre of Halpahalli - and that means 'evil' in the Finnish language. Secret meaning?

11.71 Pounds per Bukh filter - blimey, I'm beginning to feel like one of the Ancients on Canalworld who can put a price to their oil filters within a minute! You gotta admit, my filing system works well!

Yes, in the past I made a list of equivalents. But the filters we've got now will take us up to the year 2020. And then I'll have a think about things. Unless I'm dead.

You gotta admit, my filing system works well! A bit savage but only about a quid a month so not horrendous. The Mann number I listed for the BMC is £4.99
