Actually, I think Wales is an underestimated country - there's a lot of dramatic scenery to be had from Wales. I could quite happily spend a year exploring Wales. Why go to love-you-long-time Thailand or smelly-old Spain when Wales is on your doorstep?

Come home to a real fire. I considered buying a house in Llanfair Caereinion a long time back. It faced onto the A458 and there was no back garden, just the river Banwy. Talking to a local about "come home to a real fire, but a house in Wales" he said you will have no problems, you are an ordinary working old boy, not a solicitor or doctor from Birmingham. My understanding is that there are hotspots where you won't be welcome, regardless of whether you're a doctor or work in a supermarket. Parts of Anglesey and the LLeyn peninsula are hotspots of nastiness. It's probably no coincidence that the nastiness is fairly close to places such as Abersoch or Beaumaris. Both places that have been turned into hang out places for the rich of Cheshire and Greater Manchester and have house prices that border on London levels. Move to a little village 5 miles away, few if any 'foreigners' there prices still relatively low, you're likely to regret that decision as you moving there will cause house price inflation. It doesn't help that many of the moneyed of Cheshire and Greater Manchester look down on the Welsh, believe themselves to be superior. Even without that, you're not welcome in some places. I totally get it, come close to supporting it, and I've been very careful about where I've chosen.
