My ig2600 kipor has started being a bit smokey on start up, it clears under load, so I’m thinking maybe the eco/ auto throttle is sticking. There might be a problem with it’s switch. Anybody had experience of anything similar?

Piston rings need changing.

Is it using any oil? What colour smoke, blueish or blackish? It ran out of oil about three weeks ago. It’s got a sensor so it cuts out. To be fair I couldn’t say if it’s using the oil fast as I haven’t checked it for a good while. Anyway I topped it up and no bother, about the same time I had a problem with the eco mode switch sticking, I just wd40 it and it “worked” again. I’m going to replace it I think. I did think maybe I put to much oil in, it is one of those akward ones to check the level. But I checked it and it’s okay. The smoke is whitish/blueish by the way.

I best take the engine out and leave it on my back deck for three weeks then.

Sounds like it is burning oil a bit then. A bit late now but it is best not to let it auto-stop due to low oil level. There isn’t much oil in it at the best of times, hardly any when it cuts out. I can’t see it being related to the auto-throttle switch, that just affects the target rpm for the governor, either max, or variable according to load. Control of the mixture is still done by the carburettor, and anyway rich mixture gives blackish smoke. I think you will have to live with it and keep checking the oil level regularly. Not sure if parts such as new piston rings are available easily, or not.

I can live with it no problem, it’s the runners, canoeists, cyclists and paddle boarders who have the issues. Even though they have most likely driven to the water. Oh well such is life.

My IG770 is still available at the bargain price of 80 quid. It doesn't smoke.

Anybody had experience of anything similar? Change the air filter, you've possibly overfilled it a bit and the crank breather is throwing oil into the filter.

Um, foam air filters should be oiled - Mr Honda has been doing this since the C50 Cub hit the road. To oil a filter you pop it in a sandwich bag, add a bit of clean engine oil, squeeze it about a bit. Remove filter from bag, squeeze out excess then fit. I have some particularly good Putoline foam filter oil that sticks like shit to a blanket - used to get through gallons of it when I was racing the dirt bikes. An oiled air filter will not cause you to have blue smoke or excessive oil consumption... Telemachus has already hit the nail on the head. kris, I’d be tempted to live with it till it irritates you or uses more oil than petrol - whichever comes first!
