Update on this: I've filled various holes around where the rear flue emerges with fire cement. These holes seem to be down to poor fitting rather than corrosion. There's a fantastic draw when the baffle is fully opened, the fire really roars away. I've a feeling that there should be fire rope round the removable cover for the ash tray, the fit is loose because this is missing. I don't like anything about this stove so I'm only going to use it for quick fires in the evenings, ill replace it with a boatman at some stage, excellent stoves, that I could trust and regulate to burn overnight. You'd probably find that if you overhauled it and fitted new stove ropes that it would be a completely different animal. As Magnetman said, Villagers are very good stoves so any problems you are encountering are almost certainly due to neglect rather than poor design.

It will roar with no door seals, obviously, and you won't be able to regulate it, obviously. Why replace a stove that just needs rope gluing to the doors?

New stove rope and glue would be around a tenner, and expecting a stove to work properly when the stove rope is not just worn but completely absent is like expecting a car to handle well with wheels but no tyres.

One of my claims to fame is that my parents actually did have a sheep farm in Wales (Pembrokeshire) and no they were not farmers and my most vivid memory when I was about 4 or 5 is of the sheep which was standing at the side of the field having its eyes pecked out by crows. What with the standing up thing it wasn't dead. Plenty of blood around.
That would have been a good horror film scene actually.
This is why I very much dislike crows. And moneyed hippy tosser parents.

The video of the sheep and miserable woman was followed by this, peterboat 's next project Brilliat Jim I so want to have a go! Years ago John and I built a Gyro copter which we flew, it was very easy and we spent years buzzing around the farm very handy at times, when I was posted abroad we sold it. After that I did a glider course and went gliding whenever I could, I have when in the Army parachuted my whole career [mainly to keep my para pay and pension]

Good advice on here. I'm not convinced with the look of the villager, they are a bit effeminate (village people?) for me but maybe it will grow on me. So I've lashed out a tenner on new rope with glue and another 12 quid on high temperature silicone to fill the various gaps close to where the flue comes out of the back of the stove. I'll also use the silicone to make the glass airtight as the 2 bits are currently rattling around and the bolts that could ease this rattling are seized up.
By the way that 'fire cement' is total rubbish. Dries rock hard. Rock hard when steel expands when it gets hot is a particularly poor combination. If the health and safety bods had any balls they'd ban it.
