So far no serious issues have come to the fore since I moved in 2 weeks ago. Bit of maintenance needed to windows and fascias, that can wait until the spring. One thing that does need attending to is the electrics. Yesterday the electrics tripped when I switched the bathroom light on. Interestingly it was the main switch that tripped, rather than the one dedicated to downstairs lights. Switched off earlier and had a look. Positive and negative wires look fine but the earth wire looks burnt. Tracing it back into the ceiling void this section isn't covered in insulation, is covered in the blue corrosion that happens with copper, and looks very thin. Before I cut a bigger hole in the ceiling so I can access things better, does this sound like a likely scenario to cause the tripping?

The only way to tell is to do an insulation test which needs more than a multimeter. If the earth is exposed for its entire length and not just at the end of the cable sounds like the cottage is in need of a rewire as that type of cable/earthing hasn't been in use for over 50 years and may well have perished beyond safety. Having just checked the Earth must be in with the LandN to meet bs7671 (the regs) it is no longer permitted to have separate L,N,&E cables unless enclosed in conduit.
My advice would be to get an electrician in to have a look at a total rewire.

I'm afraid I agree with Loddon. Is there paperwork regarding the electrics? How old? Blueprints of the cottage? Did you not ask before buying?

Lord Finchley tried to mend his electric light It struck him dead, it served him right For it is the duty of a wealthy man To provide employment for the artisan

I'm not a house person but if the electric "cut out" as suggested in the OP it seems probable the house has an RCD system installed. Unless it's on fuses. Clinton Cool does it have round pin plugs ?
