Strangely you can get a 12v extractor that pumps directly into a waste container for about £20, no idea if they are any good

If the problem is with Rog no longer being able to do this due to his advanced age, it would probably be better to pay someone to do it, personally I'd do it for nothing and it wouldn't be a problem as I'm a lot younger than Rog but I imagine any skint-ish boater would do it for the cost of a packet of fags.
I believe it is considered best practice to drain gearbox oil rather than pumping it out through the top.

If that's your attitude, I'm off ... I cannot tolerate being on a forum where anybody thinks differently to me !

Rog calling @gazza ... Rog calling @gazza ... what do you think ?
Is it OK to pump the oil out of the top of the gear box, and what pump would you recommend ?
In the past, once a year, I've paid for a pro to service the engine as his 'look round' with skilled experienced eyes is far better than my ignorant ogle.
But my resident pro has hung up the spanners ... and to be honest he used to pump out at the dipstick for the engine oil (not using the fitted extractor) and the top of the gear box, not the drain plug (for the same reasons as me).
He always said it's better to drain, but if you're changing at the recommended intervals it doesn't make a significant difference ... the bulk of the oil is always fresh.
Besides ... why pay someone to do a job I can do ... but unfortunately the PRM 150 is a bigger box than my old Hurth, and the Beta 43 is a bigger engine ... I'm just trying to find a way to overcome the problem myself.

I've had various PRM gearboxes over the years but very rarely changed the oil. And yes they did get the hours. They don't degrade oil like an IC engine does as it is just a lube and hydraulic circuit operating oil. Ok so they get some swarf so it's worth taking the drain plug out as it has a magnet for this but other than that and seal leaks I don't get worried about gearbox oil. Worth keeping an eye on the levels obviously. I know oils don't have to endure anywhere near as much degradation in a gearbox compared to an engine, but it will still lose lubricity over time and so I always consider it worth doing once a year at least. It's a very easy job on mine, maybe five minutes to do it with a 30 minute interval to allow it to drain. It doesn't even take a litre of ATF which is only 3 or 4 quid's worth so it doesn't break the bank and it gives me a chance to look over everything else while I've got the engine boards up. I would repeat that I don't think it is good practice to drain a gearbox with a suction pump. You will not get as much oil out, and the oil you don't get out is the oil that any crap will be sitting in. I think best practice is to drain it from the drain plug and leave the drain plug off for at least 30 minutes before replacing it and refilling.

Well, if you used to be able to do it yourself then the best way to overcome the problem is to stop "coming the old soldier", man the fuck up and do it yourself.

If Rog is finding it difficult to get the drain plug off, then it might be a good idea to invest in a set of upside-down spanners. The drain plug needs to be turned the "wrong" way to undo it and normal spanners aren't designed for doing this.

Rog No issues. I do make a point of removing the drain bolt every third change, sort of too check there’s no evidence of excessive wear attached to the magnet on the bolt, or in the old oil. Probably not a necessary task as ten years on I’ve not discovered anything horrible. I know lots of people that use pumps for cars and bikes and boats without any problems. As Stabby would say, at your age you need too make life easier mate 😊

Wouldn't it be easier if the engine was supported on a long stand?
