I've had to surrender ... I can no longer get to the drain plug on my gear box.
I'm going to have to buy an extractor to remove the oil through the top.
Anyone suggest a good quality extractor, without having to sell a kidney ... gazillions on Amazon but which ?
Only holds 1.4 lts so doesn't need to be huge.

I’ve used a Pela pump for years. Can vouch for the quality. Wouldn’t go smaller than maybe 4L myself as they tend to have reduced suction as they fill up. Probably Vince is the pump expert on here?

How do you change the engine oil. I ask as if you use an extractor why can't you use the same one, and if you use a drain plug, is this likely to change in the future.
I use a Pela (as recommended by Gazza) - it is a faff getting the tube to the bottom of the PRM gearbox.

Engine oil extractor is fitted on the Beta 43.
On my old Beta bv1903 I could access the gear box drain plug ... but a combination of the Beta 43 and the PRM 150 both being slightly bigger, and the advancing years reducing my skills in contortion, I've had to surrender.
Pela sounds good, I'll take a look thanks.

With a 2 way valve or 2 ordinary valves you can plumb your gearbox drain to the same pump as the engine, once fitted, no more problem.

Perhaps easier to buy a small hand pump for a once a year job ... but thanks.

I've had various PRM gearboxes over the years but very rarely changed the oil. And yes they did get the hours.
They don't degrade oil like an IC engine does as it is just a lube and hydraulic circuit operating oil. Ok so they get some swarf so it's worth taking the drain plug out as it has a magnet for this but other than that and seal leaks I don't get worried about gearbox oil.
Worth keeping an eye on the levels obviously.

Bloomin' Ada ... Pela 400 (4litre) is almost £100 on Amazon. Are they that good that it's not worth buying a cheaper one ? Rog ETA Thanks but I definitely want to change the oil once a year

Mine is a Sealey and has worked faultlessly for 15 years. Silverline will be cheaper and almost as good it's not like you are using it every week. This is like mine I'm shocked at the price www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121755514538

You seen to visit this forum quite a lot so I guess you are used to it Another option would be to get a y valve fitted on the existing sump pump and routed to the gearbox drain then you could use the same pump for both jobs. Might work but would need a modified drain plug and some sorting out.

It was a new engine in 2019 ... the gear box oil should be changed every 750 hours according to the manufacturer ... they get nothing from giving that advice so I guess it's necessary.
Not being a multi millionaire gentleman of leisure with a range of vessels to choose from, I propose looking after the one engine I have and don't see it as pointless, but thanks again.

Thanks ... much bulkier than the Pela for storage. I saw a pump for £39 but on reading the first review the guy said the pump collapsed after one use, and was inaccessible to repair. Perhaps paying more isn't always wasted Rog

Maybe you could just get a large plastic syringe with a small diameter pipe/hose? As you say, it is only 1.5 litres or so, so even with a 100ml syringe it wouldn't take that long. I bought a cheap chinese 12v electric pump thingy but it isn't very good. And anyway, it is quite difficult to get the hose right to the bottom of the sump, so I only got about 80% of the oil out. I went back to lying on the engine and reaching underneath to undo the drain bolt. Once a year, I can tolerate that. And as you know, I am MUCH older than you!
