Anybody know who builds their shells ?
Just lately I've seen loads of ex Canal Time boats ... obviously very sturdily built, and fairly unique with the raised hand rail and no bow doors.
Wondered who did the steelwork but can't track it down on twitter etc?

I’ve never fancied hiring a boat without bow doors

Strange coincidence just saw another "This England" in Abingdon. Privately held narrow boat by the look of it. With bow doors.
I presume the canaltime boats parent company have a good insurance policy.

Shells are OK from SW Durham Steel Craft, the fitouts are terrible, built like caravans.

Still cannot understand the names of the boats.

I was unreliably advised that Canaltime boats have no front doors in order to prevent punters escaping the timeshare salesman without signing up.

There must also be a roof escape hatch otherwise any occupant of the front cabin would be brown bread if boat went down bow first after cilling in a narrow lock. Maybe they have a disclaimer about this. Or a Houdini hatch. A Spanish resorts company runs the boats it seems.

I've read that they don't have bow doors to prevent novice hirers flooding the interiors with gate paddles. Don't know if it's true. On the subject of hire boats, I don't think one of Rose Narrowboats' fleet has come past me since I've been back on my mooring. But there aren't any at their yard either. Perhaps I've just not been about when they've come past but usually there would be quite a few coming past on Saturday afternoon, or Friday adternoon/ Saturday morning heading back. Their chandlery seems to be permanently closed too. Have they suspended operations?

Called at Rose to do services and the shop and chandlery door was locked with massive cobwebs over it.
Staff were around on the offside ... looked to me like they are no longer routinely manning the shop.

Even had a reply from CWDF (pm over there) telling me about the shell builders.
Certainly seem very solid boats, and seen a few that have had openings put in the bow.
Of course the fit out can be improved once it's yours ... the shell's the main thing.

Rog You may know this already but there's a secret Elsan point at Rose Narrowboats that isn't mentioned in any of the guides.
