Thank you all for your kind words, I know I have cried buckets this day, but I know I did the right thing. Taff was my best friend, he loved me with all his heart, yes he could throw a paddy and tip his bed up if he felt wronged but I loved him for it. John knows about the chasing of boats and barking at imaginary birds, but he was a great boat dog and loved a a good cruise. I have known for a few days all wasnt well, yesterday he didnt chase boats never a good thing and food not been eaten is unknown so today when he was proper poorly it was his time and he knew it, as I had to pick him up to get him in the camper. I would have spent everything that I had to cure him but we both knew there was no cure, so I did what the poem above says and let him go to sleep with dignity

Sorry to hear that Peter. My last two dogs were quite old but relatively fit up until the last few days, kidney failure. Took them for the jab, stayed with them, carried home and buried out the back. Best to be active and go quick, hope that happens to me.

Peter, so sorry to read your sad news. It brings back so many sad memories of all our dogs who have crossed over. Each one is a one off and even today we still talk about various dogs and we smile. So out of sadness can come happiness but it takes years to grow so cherish your memories. All the best... Phil

So a new Red Border collie has come into my life, he is called Oscar he is a bundle of trouble and we love him, apart from Hugo who is shell shocked. I realised that I could not have a dog in my life and it really had to be another Border collie, Taff would approve of him I think as he loved puppies and was fantastic with Hugo. He wont replace Taff more like compliment him in my memories of a fantastic friend

Couldn't not have is a workable, grammatically correct alternative, perhaps flowing off the tongue a little easier, and avoiding the repetition that linguistic scholars try to avoid, if at all possible.

So today would have been Taffs 12th birthday, I had to go to the boat so had a quiet moment with him by his grave. The other day I was chatting with the skipper of the Exol Pride he asked me where my crazy collie was? I told him he had died, he frowned then smiled and said he and the crew missed him chasing up and down the bank as they came past madly barking at them!! I am sure John will remember those antics? Oscar is shaping up nicely 6 months old on Taffs birthday dont know how I managed that?

The first year or so is hard work Freya is now 18 months and I am pleased with how she's progressing. Her recall, very good.
