I did have an incident on the K&A all those years ago due to the dodgy way they did the banks. Almost ended up in the water. Never happened anywhere else. Definitely not ideal but to quote a local boater "yer not supposed to moor ther".

Ah.
Advice to other boaters.
Place vessel in an area where boat is awkward to get onto. Should prevent issues around boat not being there when you return.

I used to use the same mooring technique on the K&A as I use on the Thames if I don't need to get off the boat. Two small collapsible grappling anchors (really small, just a foot or so long) on light line at the front and back. Chuck them into bushes or reeds - reed are good because they usually mean that there is plenty depth of water. It means you can moor pretty much anywhere - including the offside.
Only problem is the cat sometimes thinks we are close to the bank and ends up in the water - but he is used to that. Twice in a week this summer.

I don't think i have gone on a canal and thought i would never return, areas i wouldn't bother going to again yes, like Stoke, but then you have to pass through stoke to get to other places.
Leicester is on the plans as still not gone past Yelvertoft, we shall see if we like it.
This weekend we are heading for Burton, never turned right before at Fradley, see how we get on.

Leicester is on the plans as still not gone past Yelvertoft, we shall see if we like it. This weekend we are heading for Burton, never turned right before at Fradley, see how we get on. Once past the river section at Alrewas it is slightly grim with the A38 adjacent but after that, and after Burton, it gets quite nice all the way to Shardlow. Be careful with the wide locks, they can be very aggressive going uphill and they are unusual in that itβs best to open the paddle on the opposite side of the boat, not the one on the same side as per most other wide locks. We nearly came unstuck at Swakerstone lock on the lock landing waiting to go up. I was aware that the bottom paddles let out a fierce stream but because there was a sunken boat at the end of the lock landing, it was only possible to tie up using the centre line. The chap coming down opened the offside paddle which sent a powerful current of water bouncing off the lock landing wall and between it and the boat, pushing the bow out and causing the boat to heel over at a most alarming angle. I really though it might roll over and in fact probably only didnβt because the bottom corner was on the bottom of the canal. Everything inside on the floor of course. So be warnedβ¦

Sounds fun!
I did see a few people on twitter saying they were nervous about the locks up that way.
I tend to take my time at locks I don't know, more so on doubles.
Not sure we will get much past Burton, only have five days, starting at Grendon and will dump the tub at Tamuff for a couple of weeks.

What about you ... anywhere you'll avoid ? Newton Heath/Failsworth/Miles Platting. I'd be quite happy if they filled that whole stretch in and built branches of KFC and Kwik-Fit on it. The very worst of Mancland. Even the better parts are best avoided. It's not the place, it's the people. I know, because I'm one myself but it took moving away to gain this enlightenment. Still, to be fair, they aren't as petty as the Welsh.
