I have to admit that when I watched that I thought him a bit of a snowflake - "up North" on the L & L between Melling and Liverpool last year, the weed was SO dense not only did it foul my prop spectacularly but actually ground us to a halt mid channel - even when the prop was cleared, it was so thick, we couldn't push through it without doing 'ice breaking' rocking from side to side to get going again...
We didn't unofficially close the waterway but did warn boats coming towards us they may experience difficulties

He should have tried the Chesterfield about 7 or 8 years ago ...... I eventually had to abandon the attempt after it took me nearly all day to manage about 6 miles

I understand the Slough arm has always been the same at the right time of year.
We first went down the GU to London in 2007 planning to check out what Betjeman had to say about Slough, but were strongly advised by numerous folks, including moorers on the arm, that it was thick with weed, and wasn't worth the effort anyway.
Sections of the Chesterfield are notorious for weeding up badly every year.
Worth visiting in early spring if determined to.
