From a passing view of face book and from the increasing number of boating vloggers , the number of people who have been persuaded by TV publicity that a life afloat on inland waterways is for them, seems to grow daily. Boat prices seem to be climbing rapidly and no doubt marinas will begin to fill. I wonder if the issues with cruising an historic, crumbling, and poorly maintained network ( we've all experienced ) will later result in something of a crash in prices due to a glut of unwanted boats ? I've recently read of many people buying a boat to live on after a single boating holiday. And based on some 'newbie questions' asked, even those that have regularly hired appear not to have considered the consequences of boating without someone else to pump out, service, and maintain their boat each week Rog

At some point there will be a hell of a lot of boats for sale.
Couple that with the CRT drive to modify boater behaviour with "t&c" and the network being in relatively poor condition and it is interesting to consider how there would be a market for all the extra boats built in the last few years in addition to all the existing ones.
A bloke I know once suggested setting up a narrow boat breakers yard. I think the time will come soon when that will prove a profitable business.

I follow a young couple on social media, all summer they have been taking photos of wild mooring on the oxford, living off the land, sitting outside drinking blackberry wine and working on their laptops.. oh its a lovely world.
Last week they said they were dreading winter and all it brings.
Says a lot really.

We have decided to get the boat painted as early as possible next spring, then whack a for sale in the window at a stupid price, and see what comes..

We have also decided we shall be back on the water, this will happen when Gill sells her mums place in the next few years when hopefully the boat boom has gone and boats are cheaper
We did think about getting a motorhome, but it just doesn't cut it for me, i like the canals, even if they are falling apart.

I guess boat prices will drop next year, assuming foreign holidays and travel get back to normal. Boats very similar to ours are currently selling for almost twice what we paid 5 years ago. Certainly spoken with more than usual new boater types, most are ‘living the dream’ and enjoying it immensely. Maybe the new boaters are here to stay. I hope so, they tend to bring some much needed youth and enthusiasm to our waterways.

Don’t be gone to long. We have also looked at motor homes. In fact, had covid/Brexit not occurred we would now be getting ready to winter abroad in one. Motorhomes in Britain isn’t something that interests me. Covid will go(has almost) but brexits kind of ruined our plans of escaping our winters for warmer climates.

I would imagine a good few will stay, but a winter of stoppages/mud/freezing boats at 5pm when you get home from work will make the rest realise its not such an easy life as the tv made it out to be.
House prices must be forcing a fair few young people on the canals anyway, its shocking how little you get for your money.

I like the idea of bumming around the canaries in one for the winter.
