Can someone please explain to me, WHERE the inflation figures quoted in the media this week have come from ?
Apparently it's something like 3.4 % - down a little and lower than expected.
HOW can that be true when I just bought some of those instant fire-logs from B & M (last time I bought them was in Llangollen a few months back at 99p each) - yesterday in Stafford they've gone up to £1.25 AND have gotten smaller in size (the packet is the same size but the log is nearly 2 inches shorter!).
The thing that is worrying though is it's not just fuel logs, it's everything - ergo, inflation must be sky rocketing but it's not being admitted to...
Surely what will happen next is the Bank of England will panic and interest rates will shoot up ... ok, those with savings will benefit but those with mortgages will be on their knees in no time.
Just saying.

Aren't the latest figures quoted for September. I think it could be a bit higher at the end of October.
I can remember the mortgage rate being something like 15% in the 80s. I think those that have maxed on mortgage borrowing will struggle if the interest rate just goes up by 1 or 2%.

That is the worry I suppose - I've just done another 5 year fix (which actually saved me enough to lease a car) but anyone on variable will be up the creek... I've a memory of my old boss coming into the office after lunch on the day the interest rates hit 12% I think it was, in tears as he had no idea how he was going to meet his new payments.
Thing is though, everything IS going up - just look at fuel prices... certainly MORE than 3 or 4 % - I just don't get WHERE folks are supposed to find the money from. I've only put 30 quid a week from this years trips to next years but I'm beginning to think I've stuffed up there.

These are exceptional times ... I suspect attempting to fix a price twelve months in advance is not going to be possible.
Price adjustments to take account of rising costs are inevitable.
I was recently reading a post by a steel fabricator, where someone had asked for a ball park price for rebottoming a boat ... he said it was currently impossible to give any kind of quote in advance due to the ongoing rises in the cost of materials ... steel alone was rising at the rate of 40% a week.

The annoying thing with things like gas, petrol, steel and many other things, is not that they have suddenly become a lot more expensive to produce and distribute (though those pesky lorry drivers have increased transport costs), it is that with the supply and demand thing, currently demand is outstripping supply, and the manufacturers and distributors see an opportunity to make a huge profit by putting up their prices, so the greedy get a lot richer on the backs of everyone else.

The inflation figure for September is always fiddled downwards because it's the monthly figure which determines next year's pension and benefit rises. Fiddled even more than usual I should say because the mythical "basket of goods" includes technology based items which tend to come down in price over time DVD players, Iphones sort of thing.

I purchase paper and board amongst other things, the last twelve months have made 2020 look like a walk in the park, corrugate pricing is through the roof, caused by home shopping and the waste (recycled material) not working its way back into the mills to be re-processed.
Board mills have closed the books for the year meaning i can not get material out of them till mid Jan, then the pricing will have gone up again twice.
There will come a point in the next 12 months if the pricing does not stabilise and reduce, where businesses will not be able to supply products in the usual packaging produced by paper/board, this only leaves plastic which we are told is bad and must reduce, oh and next year the new tax comes into effect where if you do not purchase/use a plastic item with at least 30% recycled content then you will be taxed extra.
The perfect storm is brewing!

I think a lot of problems in the drive to "green" everything at once, that we might have just been able to squeak past if Covid hadn't compounded issues, are coming home to roost. I think we are going to see quite a bit of backtracking from certain countries in order for them to survive. Some latest research indicates that some of the assumptions concerning polar winds were wrong and there might be much colder winters in more southern latitudes. This will play merry hell with the expected consumption of energy in those areas and could greatlycomplicate and worsen the whole situation insideclimatenews.org/news/02022018/cold-weather-polar-vortex-jet-stream-explained-global-warming-arctic-ice-climate-change/

Whilst pondering world issues last night i came up with a great idea.
Countries like Africa that need investment should have solar farms built by the countries who need the power in winter, uk for example, then they put lovely long power cables in the sea bed that bring all that power to the uk when we need it, we then pay these African solar famers for the power, they get cash for more cows and flip flops and we get electric to power all our shit in the winter.
I might run for the UN head job.
No holes to be picked on this so don't try.
