I must say I rather dislike signs that say the likes of “please pass at tickover” and “2mph past moored boats” etc because there is an implied assumption that without the sign, I wouldn’t slow down. Which is presumptuous and a bit rude. And factually stupid because the correct speed and rpm is very location-dependant. And in particular the stupidity of the signee riles me because in most cases, you can’t actually read these signs until it is far too late to slow down if you hadn’t already done so. It’s all part of people feeling empowered to tell other random people they’ve never met, what to do and how to conduct themselves, without even first having the decency to see how they are going to conduct themselves. Control freakery par excellence.
Today’s sign on a moored boat took the biscuit “What part of SLOW DOWN don’t you understand? Rude arrogant arsehole. Unfortunately this boat was in a line of other moored boats, otherwise I’d have reversed back and passed at normal cruising speed.
Does anyone on here have a “slow down” type sign on their boat? Go on, be honest! And if so, have you weighed up the effectiveness of the sign (which I strongly suspect is zero, since anyone who doesn’t think it appropriate to slow down isn’t going to do so because of a sign, even if they could read it in time) vs how much of a control freak arseshole twat it makes you look?

I probably wouldn't have phrased it quite that way, but I do agree.
The whole 'slow down' thing has become a nonsense ... how many boats do you see pass moored boats at normal cruising speed, and yet they have silly 'slow down' stickers displayed on their own boat.
I choose to approach and pass moored boats as slowly as I can, largely cos I like to have a good nosey ... yet still I occasionally get shouted at.
Water moves ... and other than in very exceptional cases, perhaps we should just moor tight and accept the fact.

I have one that says 'Stay away thieves'
Although i have took it down now as feel safe till Feb/March.
Yes, the slow down signs do pee me off, i know a boater who got a stern telephone call from CRT, he was getting quite angry at boaters going too fast past his boat and they reported him for being threatening, he has a sign also.

I think it's very responsible of you to warn everybody.

I remember a singularly irritating sign saying "for ducks sake slow down". My reaction was to speed up as I know ducks like the waves.

On Dulcinea I have these stickers among many other warning stickers on the vessel. You have to keep people safe it is a duty. Just a disclaimer really.

There's a boat on the Middlewich branch that has the "Master Boaters pass at 2MPH, Masturbators pass faster" one. I aspire to be a master boater, but always forget to increase speed to 2mph when passing that one

I have considered 'If you think I'm going too fast you're probably not moored up properly'.

Generally agree, however I would delete “probably” and “up”.

I don't bother about slow down signs being a bit off, its the rude boat names I take offence at.
