I must say I rather dislike signs that say the likes of “please pass at tickover” and “2mph past moored boats” etc because there is an implied assumption that without the sign, I wouldn’t slow down. Which is presumptuous and a bit rude. And factually stupid because the correct speed and rpm is very location-dependant. And in particular the stupidity of the signee riles me because in most cases, you can’t actually read these signs until it is far too late to slow down if you hadn’t already done so. It’s all part of people feeling empowered to tell other random people they’ve never met, what to do and how to conduct themselves, without even first having the decency to see how they are going to conduct themselves. Control freakery par excellence. Today’s sign on a moored boat took the biscuit “What part of SLOW DOWN don’t you understand? Rude arrogant arsehole. Unfortunately this boat was in a line of other moored boats, otherwise I’d have reversed back and passed at normal cruising speed. Does anyone on here have a “slow down” type sign on their boat? Go on, be honest! And if so, have you weighed up the effectiveness of the sign (which I strongly suspect is zero, since anyone who doesn’t think it appropriate to slow down isn’t going to do so because of a sign, even if they could read it in time) vs how much of a control freak arseshole twat it makes you look? Bollox to them. I wiggle the tiller when I go past to make them rock a bit. They come out to shout and see me going slow as fuck. Lovely day innit! Leaves them speechless.

they should be glad they don't get rowers going past .... the wake from an eight going at full chat is amazing and even makes Sabina move noticeably

I know someone with a Seamaster 23 who was shouted at to slow down as they passed a fucking cretin by the Railway bridge in March, what’s unusual about that you ask? They were being towed home with a dead outdrive by their friends on a Narrowboat who didn’t get shouted at!

We had glided past said cretin at first in gear at idle then In neutral but oh no that wasn’t enough! Shouty Shouty Sweary Sweary responded to with the bird 🖕 My tale paled into insignificance when my Friend Tony arrived at PYC 😂

Every Sunday, we get a procession of canoes from the local club through our moorings, and nothing rocks the boats like them. Several years back when I moored elsewhere, a 16ft cruiser with a 20hp outboard rocked moored boats to such an extent that an old traditional boat was lifted and dropped down on an obstruction that it sprung a base plank and sank.

Everybody has a right to be grumpy.
When I walk the dogs in the local park I loudly complain to the absent cretins that they have dropped rubbish on the ground. What really riles me is the well-meaning do-gooders who carry a pick-up stick and a bin bag and dutifully pick up beer cans, takeaway cartons and all the other crap that has been left by the criminal arseholes. I'll bet that sometimes the crims are in the vicinity, sniggering.
My wife used to walk at busy times of day and if she saw anyone drop litter (usually a kiddy throwing a crisp packet or plastic bottle on the ground as she/he/IT walked along with Mum) she would pick it up and catch up with Mum saying "I think you dropped this".
It might be nice if all litter was returned to the manufacturer of the contents with a significant bill for the cost of returning it. That might put up the price extortionately and dissuade the public from paying through the nose for stuff sold in disposable and non-biodegradable packaging.
Well, I'm just grumpy - so there!!

I probably wouldn't have phrased it quite that way, but I do agree. The whole 'slow down' thing has become a nonsense ... how many boats do you see pass moored boats at normal cruising speed, and yet they have silly 'slow down' stickers displayed on their own boat. I choose to approach and pass moored boats as slowly as I can, largely cos I like to have a good nosey ... yet still I occasionally get shouted at. Water moves ... and other than in very exceptional cases, perhaps we should just moor tight and accept the fact. Rog I've only been shouted at once, I hadn't even reached the boat when he opened the side hatch, I didn't even have the engine in tickover on approach, as I had just enough momentum to get past, and I was at snails pace anyway, was thinking about mooring up, it was just ridiculous. I usually go past at tickover or less, just enough to maintain steerage. Agree it is very frustrating if there are long lines of moored boats, I tend to think they should have fenders and springs if they are permanent, so I d probably go past at tickover.

When I was narrow boating I took the slow down thing too literally. Personality fault I take things literally.
If I could have a pound for every time a boater behind me shouted at me to 'speed up' I would have more beer money.
Ridiculous really "stop motorway madness on canals" but there we are. Lots of people are on a schedule and do not like people going really slowly even if it is past moored boats.
Maybe things have changed. It's been over a decade since I did regular canal boating.
