I'm doing a full scale refit of my barge and have realised that I have the option to fit an all singing all dancing toilet.
I can't use the "out of shite out of mind' instant freeze mortar due to tall buildings and proximity to city airport.
So what do people think it's the Best Shit Disposal Solution?
I do have an included pumpout machine at my disposal which draws me towards the small holding tank option.
However there may other avenues not yet explored.
All advice welcome.
Thanks.

Especially if there is a pumpout facility available, macerator and holding tank is what I would go with.
as you very well know it's always horses for courses, but I think that's probably the leading contender in this case

If you have a shit sucker included in your mooring then its a no brainer Has to be a pump out. How it gets into the tank is up for discussion.

I'm happy with my macerator (with 500 litre holding tank) - in summer, I've abandoned the biological washing liquid approach as once it gets over 1/3 full, it just doesn't really work well enough. Instead, I bung in 5 litres of blue at the start and when it begins to pong, do a pump out - probably month for 2 of us ) or 2 weeks with guests - be it a singleton or couple... women are the worst for some reason.
I've also got a thetford in the crew loo cupboard (no 1's only ) (well no 2's in an emergency if folks are not getting up early enough for my bowels to wait for) and that can last the 2 of us for a week for "over night wees".

I've been using a Lavac sea toilet to holding tank for a few years so probably keep that but it needs relocating. Just wondered if there was a better option out there. The shitsnake is permanently connected to the boat unless I move the boat. It's my own shit snake. Nobody else's. Green button for on, red for off. No extra charge until CRT read this and realise I am wearing out the brushes on their pumps

Have you not considered the green and simple model, the cardboard box the expensive bog gets delivered in?

I think the compost would block up the pumps.
We have two pumps a big diaphragm pump then a tank under the pontoon with a centrifugal lifter pump to dispose of material to main sewer which is above the mooring. Works ok actually but would be a problem with compost.
I like that one @loddon mentioned but even for my vast untold wealth it's quite costly !

German engineering! £800 or thereabouts last time I looked a few years ago, suspect they are well over £1k now. This looks better www.rheinstrom-pumpen.de/en/products/toilets/electric-wc/250-toilet-y12wJust looked😱 over €2k plus shipping

There was a much more limited choice 20 years ago when I fitted out Sabina I used a Tecma which if I remember correctly was an eye watering £300 (maybe a bit under?) they are about double that now It was the height of the "short" version they do today and at the time, if they had done the taller version that is what I would have got. It has done well and so far the only fault was caused by a small perfume bottle being dropped down and then flushed
This snapped a blade off the impeller and bent the chopping blade, so a new pump was fitted with the old one retained "in case" (about 10 years ago)
on very rare occasions the small air ballance pipe has been blocked by scale but is an easy job to remove and either clear or replace.
mine had the pump replaced by an electric valve and an anti syphon valve and runs from the domestic supply
(because the Benfleet mooring was drying .... in fact so drying it would be better to say that sometimes there was water)
In all it has worked well and I am pretty sure I have had value for money

To be fair the Lavac with manual pump has been very good for a number of years even with woman and children living on boat. The only thing which is an issue is backflow through the pump from the short bit of hose to the tank messes up the bowl a bit. I made a little self filling flushing cistern which has worked really well. Just a small tank with solenoid valve and float switch and a suction from the Lavac input tube. You have to have this to break the contact between domestic water flow and the toilet itself. Normally they draw external water but pointless when you have unlimited fresh water anyway. It's been a good bog that one and a proper boat item. When I move the toilet and tank to the new location I think I will install a feed of white vinegar into the flushing cistern via a float switch and solenoid valve, just for a small feed of vinegar as that is a very effective cleaning agent and helps the whole thing smell nice and clean. Its not bad but when left for a while there can be a bit of smell there. I suppose bearing in mind the tonnes of family shit which have passed through the system it's worth keeping as a family hair loom anyway

I am thinking of adding a viewing window and some internal lighting in the holding tank and making it into a feature.
I think it could be quite interesting mood lighting.
Jigsaw out a slot along the side and bolt a piece of perspex over it with sikaflex and waterproof LED lamps inside it.

Would that be at eye or bottom level?

If you go the cassette route, I've plumbed a tap feed direct to the bowl flush pipe. Saves having to use the shower pipe to fill the cassette flush tank.
