From the olden days, it might suit a boat less old boater. Licence or PRC not required.

The bloke on the towpath makes it look a bit dodgy. Modern tech etc perhaps it's a setup.
Or not in Englandland.
Not that everything on here must be Englandland related but one wonders why timber would be floated.

I didn’t realise paddle boarding went back that far! I was actually wondering if he was the original paddle-boarder !😁

I think you are confusing me with other posters. Not according to rumours caused by your photo with the ginger god. Honestly, if I did "bowl from the pavilion end" Quaysider would be my dream guy. Although I doubt he would put up with my ways for very long, same as the rest of them.

In 1961 I had a 10 ton Bedford lorry and got a load to pick up from Surrey docks. When I got there it turned out to be 6 30ft 12inch x 12inch Douglas fir baulks. They were floating in the dock and a chap jumped down onto them nd directed the Crane . They were soon on board hanging over the headboard and overhanging the back with water running down the windscreen. The old lorry rolled about a bit but they stayed on and I took them to Daventry where they went into a big hole as shoring. The photo here looks much like from that time and certainly no safety gear as we understand it not even a life jacket but always a flat hat.

Did you know hi viz was first introduced in the UK in 1965, nowadays the law deems an employer responsible so I can see why they make a fuss. Although an Australian study of drivers trying to see stationary cyclists on a closed circuit found that fluescent tops were not a significant improvement on black clothing at night and that retro-reflective strips were more effective when attached to knees and ankles than when worn on the upper body. In modern day urban roads with lights and reflective signs everywhere I bet drivers are more likely to spot an unlit cyclist in black than one that is lit up and blending in with the background. I mean people always moan about cyclists not having lights , but if they didn't see them how did they know?
