I think these magnet danglers are mostly pia, especially those who abandon scrap on towpath. I thought CRT discouraged it, but there are no blue notices, so by default, they encourage it.

I think these magnet danglers are mostly pia, especially those who abandon scrap on towpath. Personally I think they are doing good by getting metals from the canal bed to the towpath. There should be some system in place to move it on from there into recycling but overall it's better out than in.

Leaving scrap on the towpath is wrong. When I was chucking "the beast" in the canals before anyone else knew what a neodymium magnet was I always put the shite back in the cut in a sensible place.
People using the towpaths do not want to encounter this waste. Not interesting.
I also avoided bridges.

This is "the beast": 76mm X 50mm N50 neodymium magnet from a food processing line. Must have been around 2005 I bought it. £200. The bloke did mention that it would break my hand if I got trapped. I put it into an old brass shell casing with a coach bolt and a big eye nut. Had a lot of good gear out with that before the idiots turned up !!

never had a neodymium magnet .... I had a horseshoe magnet from a 50 Kw WWII Radar magnetron that was seriously strong ..... but weighed 8 or 9 pounds on it's own

Oh yes the kids and the old toys.
I recently sat on a large tomb outside St Dunstan's church and explained to them (my own offspring units) the awfulness of death and the pointlessness of life and how the tomb reminded me of the old coffin moneybox I had as a kid.
Turns out it was a creepy coffin bank.. Really good actually and the younger kid now wants one and asks me about it.
It was a funny toy to be fair
I suppose in these covid days it adds up "it's the coffin that carries you off not the coffin they carry you off in".
