I just went a bit over enthusiastic and bought two recovery magnets on ebay, a generic Chinese one and a pre-loved Sea Searcher. Any idea which if either will be better for whatever task?

The sea searcher is really good for getting gas bottles out of the canal with.

Sea searchers are great provided you remember to remove the keep before use. Don’t ask me how I know (twice!).

Sea searchers are great provided you remember to remove the keep before use. Don’t ask me how I know (twice!). Yes but have you tried picking a windlass or mooring pin out of the cut with one? I suppose one could have a magnet out of it being pretty to look at and aesthetics but if you want to actually get something back out that you can't see then you have to have a neodymium magnet because it will do the job faster. I have no interest in this despite once selling magnets but the blah blah blah and the blah blah blah is quite amazing. The sea searcher keeper scam is a great marketing triumph. Like so many marketing stories you are being told something that is irrelevant to how you will use the product. The joy of marketing.

neodymium strength is neodymium strength, nothing else matters.

Actually that's not true, coating and the way the material is formed/compounded is also key, no having a super strength magnet that breaks the first time it hits something is kinda useless!
