In support of the idea of creating forum content that doesn't incite conflict, I post this minor, unimportant, first world quandary. Most work mornings, I stick a slice of bread in the pop-up electric toaster ... go about getting ready ... then have toast for breakfast. I've been home and working for about nine weeks, and the system's worked, every working day. So why is it this morning, the same toaster has cremated my slice of bread, filling the kitchen with noxious fumes , and providing charcoal rather than toast ! Bizarrely , I put a second slice in ... and that was fine. Electrickery is the devil's work Rog

We put too much trust into machines Rog.
Bring back the days of open fires on a Sunday night with coal fork and a crumpet impaled onto it.

Sounds great @twerp ... but the idea is I can get ready whilst my toast is 'doing' ... if I have to sit with a toasting fork (the much more fun and romantic way) the entire point of the electric toaster is lost ... such a problem !

Never had a toaster in our households and obviously wouldn't have one on a boat but it seems likely they would need to be cleaned now and then.
Was the piece of bread slightly thicker than normal?
Toasters are all rather infra dig.

Toasting time varies with the type of bread and in particular its moisture content. If the bread is stale and dry, it will charcoalify much quicker than fresh moist bread.
And of course if it is disgusting tasteless plain white supermarket sliced blotting paper bread, god is punishing you for making such bad choices in your life, by briefly altering the laws of physics to ensure it is ruined. It is just a foretaste of the afterlife.

White bread is a funny thing. when I was at school my mum would make me sandwiches from bread she made at home. not in a machine but by hand. All I wanted was the crisps and white bread the other boys had.
I was rather surprised when one of the other boys expressed an interest in acquiring some of the home made bread as he appeared to think it was substantially superior to the M&S junk he had.
I always thought it was rather boring, but I suppose in reality it was a quality product.

The only white loaf I can eat these days is tiger loaf, plain white sliced has to be the most boring of breads available, brown is good although for somethings you have to go with a nice 50/50. How about you Tony Dunkley what are your thoughts on bread?

dogless The single most useful household appliance i have purchased in recent years is my filter coffee machine uk.russellhobbs.com/buckingham-coffee-maker-20680It has a clock and auto function so I can fill it at night with a filter paper, a scoop of coffee grounds, one mugs worth of water - set to come on 5 minutes before I get out of bed and I have a fresh, hot cup of coffee ready to face the day. The same concept wont work with a toaster sadly
