Bloke wants a sign for a pub called "The cat and fiddle".
He tells the sign maker "I would like a space between the words cat and and and and and fiddle".
I have always done this one with the kids and yesterday it came up and there was a disagreement. The older one was adamant it should be "I would like a space between the words cat and and and fiddle".
Manic arguing between the siblings ensued and it was hilarious. The younger one dragged me out of bed and ordered me to explain it.
I still think the version with 5x ands is correct but I can understand why the one with 3x ands could be seen as being correct also.

Here's one with 7 - I could make it 70, or 700.
I used my photocopier and it spat out pictures of Ant and Dec and Ant and Dec and Ant and Dec and then it jammed.
Pass the spliff.

bodger Not quite because the last part indicates you would like a space between "fiddle". You have to have the extra too ands in there for it to make sense or split it into two sentences.

How to explain where you want the spaces to appear on a pub sign. If you just tell the signwriter to write "cat and fiddle" he might just write "catandfiddle" then you have a useless sign. You will need to explain to him(or her, or if non-specific then perhaps it) where the spaces are needed. I reckon you need a space between the words cat and and and and and fiddle. I am intransigent on this point.

The old curmudgeon is still enjoying the sun and sand ( and his women) in the Philippines. He has had his shots, the local Mayor took him! The immigration have granted him another 12 months visa so he will not get arrested again. Thanks for asking, he is well. If I can think of an interesting topic, I'll let you know. As it is I am busy sorting out HMG's current cock ups with the French, my least favourite task, after Beirut. Perhaps a discussion about someone stranded rudderless?

Perhaps a discussion about someone stranded rudderless? Good that he is well. Shame he didn't go to an island to be worshipped as a god king. Tales of the negotiations would be very interesting. Official Secrets? Aren't there some fictitious talks with a fictitious country you could regale us with tales of, in a similar vein?

your trouble is you are getting too handy andy

Fair point. Maybe that's what the kid who thought it was "cat and and and fiddle" was getting at. I have always assumed it was "cat and and and and and fiddle" but I see what you mean. It's obvious due to what you say.
Very interesting and thanks for the explanation. It is something I have struggled with myself for about 35 years.
