Has anyone here been into caravans or motorhomes, or campers.
Or sleeping in the car?
Just wondered as it seems to be a bit of an overlap with the boat situation.
I've never slept in a road vehicle in my life but it seems like an interesting diversion from boating.
Obviously it could never be half as pleasant due to the lack of water but I wonder...
Could be okay if done right ?

I think Happy Nomad is into caravaning / motor homes. It seems to be a natural progression for a lot of canal boating vloggers

Spent 30-odd years sleeping more in the truck than in my house. Would nearly always be away at least Sunday-Friday but often for weeks or even months at a time. It's very much like a very small motorhome, and more comfortable than it sounds.

Plenty of years in a caravan growing up. Loved it.
Lots of camping still to this day.
I have spent the odd night in the back of the van.
Cars aren't comfortable, we always folded the read seats and camped in one when in Wales following the rally. Never slept well.

Could be okay if done right ? I have sometimes considered the notion of a campervan as wheels, especially as it would mean a lower insurance premium. The scenario that appeals the most is something like a Renault Trafic which would be fitted out reasonably well, this could be done for around £2000.

Lived in a caravan for 4 or 5 months between house and boat - loved it - well apart from having to reverse the bloody thing! When boaters complain about how difficult it is to reverse I always smile and think of that bloody tin box that NEVER went the way it should have done...!
Very similar to living on a small narrowboat but you can go any where (apart from places where you might need to reverse...).
Slept in the car twice, once on the A82 north of Crianlarich (rescued by snowplough and the AA...), once near Cortina in the Italian Alps with the future Mrs Idiot (August BH weekend and everywhere booked up) - both will always live in my memory as the most uncomfortable nights I've spent within walking distance of a road.

Agree. I've 'slept' in a car once or twice, never a good experience. The best you can say is the doors are lockable and it keeps the rain off. Similar to your experiences it was a thing born of necessity.

Slept in our little Toyota Auris 30 nights in 2016 when we drove to England and back, and round and about England & Wales. Have slept in it many other times too such as when we went to Senja island, northern Norway, in July 2020:
Bedroom at 1:26
Before this car, slept in my Mazda 626 estate many times too, between Finland & England, and round northern Finnish/Norwegian Lapland. Quite fun when you put some thought into it, and everything you need packed. Sleeping horizontally on a mattress, with quilts or in sleeping bags.

Best car I ever had to sleep in was the much maligned Maxi ...... with the front seats folded right back it made just one large comfortable level bed

There's bound to be the odd nutter who does it on purpose.

We've had a caravan for years, several 4 berths, taking grandchildren away, when they were little we once took 5 of them, squeezed into the bunk beds. I find it more economical for purchase and running costs than a camper - had a couple of them, converted vans myself. We downsised a few years back to a lightweight Freedom 2 berth, a rot proof grp box, that will be light enough to tow with an electric car when we get one in the next couple of years.
