we had a gas-fired AGA in our previous home and never turned it off; during hot spells we turned it down to "idling speed" but never switched it off because of the faff of getting it to fire up again. 'twas the heart of the home but I'm glad we moved and have got over the withdrawal symptoms. the gas bills were enormous, even before the current crisis.

We had coal or oil Agas in our houses in Cwm Gwaun (Wales), Edinburgh and Sussex. Nice things to have in a large house. Later I put a Rayburn in my narrow boat but hell's teeth did it go through the wood and coal! Very comfortable though. Lots and lots of ash dirt.

I donβt like them because of the small fire boxes. So I sold it on eBay, a Muslim guy from Burnley bought it for his garage he said. I often wonder what happened when he lit it, as it stunk of pork fat from all the pig that had been cooked in it.

The AGA strikes me as being a miracle in marketing. When I was a kid they were something poor tenant farmers had and often the only source of heating in a damp and draughty farmhouse. Somewhere along the way they turned into the most expensive way possible to boil an egg.

The garage will probably be rented out as housing.

I had 17 years of good earnings servicing oil Aga's and Rayburns. I was always aware of those that were style over substance and those that triggered a nervous breakdown to their owners when they started to underperform. When installed in suitable premises, they are so much more than a cooker, and used to their full potential, they cook food so much more effectively than normal cookers. The latent heat in the appliance gives a good even cooking over a period. The introduction of the later electric units generally are not used as they should be, with the owners turning them on and off like normal cookers. The 'original' electric Aga's had three banks of 6 kw elements and needed an industrial electric supply. Yes, they are expensive to buy and run, but then again so is a Bentley compared to a Ford Focus; each to his own. The Aga induction hob model compared to an electric range cooker at Β£6,000 or so will outlast the cheap tin plate cased units and provide a much better performing cooker for a dedicated cook.
Just to keep Foxy up to date, I was self employed and appeared nowhere in Companies House, or any other Government/official departmental websites other than HMRC where I declared my earnings and paid taxes due. I was insured for private and public liability and was considered by my customers and peers as a professional.

My mum used to put the newborn kids in the warming oven on our AGA. It was one of the extra big coal fired units with about 4 ovens and a pot warmer on the side as well as the usual insulated hot plates. She was a good goat herder.
The one we had on the farm was like this but 1970s and a coal burner. Others we had were smaller. This was a nice one.
I remember that thermometer like it was yesterday but actually it was well over 40 yars ago.

Being raised in pit houses (NCB rented property) the only heating was open coal fires in the two downstairs rooms with the kitchen fire having an oven.
Didn't realise we were posh π
