It's odd how on the one hand you are so enthusiastic about new gadgets and on the other a massive luddite. I really like all the electric stuff but I also like mooring in the shade so can recognise the contradiction in a number of different ways. You just need a large periscope arrangement to channel the light onto the panels.

Apparently the boat has an 'eco mode' for cruising, which uses significantly less battery power. I guess it just means you travel much slower. I wonder what an electric boat would be like on tidal rivers ... suppose with a big enough prop it wouldn't matter. By the way the boat had bow AND stern thrusters, although why I have no idea. Rog As it happens, British Seagull made something unofficially known as the 'barge-pusher' which had a huge prop - 14" diameter. However the key to success was the 4:1 reduction ratio which made the prop very slow-turning. I imagine it was fairly deep-pitched as well. Perhaps surprisingly the motor that powered it was the same item found on the standard unit, producing (at best) a mere 3HP. But as the name suggests, and according to the legend, this was sufficient to push the barge. The limitation with the average narrowboat is the clearance between the propshaft centre and the uxter(?) plate, which generally isn't as much as that. I've just had a funny thought; on most NBs the underwater profile isn't particularly maximised for aqua-dynamic efficiency; instead, the swim plates are angled to the cabin sides as abruptly as possible, presumably to maximise internal space. But if one had a longer rear deck on one's cruiser stern boat, then the swim could be far more progressive. And it's a similar story with the bow if the entire front was wholly given over to water-tank space as previously described.

One could consider a tunnel.
