Trent & Mersey Canal Location: Derwent Mouth Lock - Trent & Mersey Canal Starts At: Lock 1, Derwent Mouth Lock Ends At: Lock 1, Derwent Mouth Lock
Wednesday 5 July 2023 until further notice
Type: Navigation Closure Reason: Water resources
Original message:
Due to the unexpected drop in water levels on the Trent & Mersey, we have made the decision to temporarily close Derwent Mouth Lock.
Our local team are carrying out water control and the closure of the lock will help them to manage the levels.
Boaters are kindly asked to avoid travelling along the rest of the Trent & Mersey where possible, to minimise the levels from dropping further.
My bold. Hmmm, clearly avoiding travelling along the Trent and Mersey around the Anderson Lift area is definitely going to help water levels at Derwent Mouth. Or to put it another way - clueless!

Just travelled south from Stone and met a boater racing back to their mooring above Bosley before they close the locks.
Another crew were complaining about the Hassel Green stoppage (heel post issue?) where an engineer will not even visit the site until Friday (contractor?) and generally every one we met is complaining about C&RT management.
How things have changed in recent years.
Oh, and from my memory the Trent feeds the T&M from south of Alrewas.
Any way, levels are good around here (Burston).
And on the plus side I found a BW key this morning ... always good to have a spare 😁

Unless the Trent dries up, there's an unlimited water supply for the canal from the sluice and weir at Wychnor Lock all the way to Derwent Mouth. It could be a new leak somewhere that C&RT(Ltd) haven't woken up to yet, . . there's plenty of scope for leaks along that length, what with culverts, bank leaks, or even the aqueduct over the Dove. On the other hand, it could be something just as simple as the feeder weir and paddle at Wychnor blocked up with rubbish.

I suspect it will be leak somewhere in the last pound (through Shardlow) as there have been several such low water stoppages on that pound recently. Nothing much will happen until there is a catastrophe.

I see now that they've put back the closure date for Bosley locks to 31 July, subject to weekly reviews.
The couple racing back to their mooring will at least be able to relax a little.

Here we are sitting in a lock on the middle of the Atherstone flight… And a zoom of that little blue sign… So apparently we are not at Atherstone locks after all, they are a 5 minute walk away.

Have you clocked the problem on the Nene? Yes, fairly pissed off. I drafted an email to EA asking for my money back for the Anglian Pass. However when we’d calmed down we decided we could detour down the GU to Berko or the like, maybe take in Aylesbury, before hitting Northampton on the 18th.this still gives us a reasonable amount of time to “do” the ML, Gt Ouse, Cam etc before end of August.

Not good is it. Berko and Aylesbury sounds like a plan though, boating eh. Enjoy both whatever you decide.

Perhaps the little blue sign is pointing you towards the little man at the top of the locks who will be wearing a little blue life jacket with the same logo and who is ready and waiting just for you............

Could be. We encountered a couple of volockies just below this lock, the were cutting grass etc. Great. It was only at the top lock that we encountered the swarm of volockies, one standing by each bottom gate to close them as I drove in. Jeff was on the top paddles so I suppose we had to endure that. The huddle were bullshitting about this and that, totally ignored Jeff. Meanwhile the (not so) black sheep volockie, who was clearly not down with the gang, stood near the bottom gates and chatted to me.

They usually ask "are you on your own, love?", admonish me for stepping across the gates then let me get down the rest of the flight on my own....

Keep your eye on stoppages, lots of issues once past Leighton Buzzard. Several locks failing. I’m not that way, so am only going by alerts.

I do get innumerable emails from CRT about stoppages but have ignored and deleted all the ones not related to our planned route. But now the plan has changed…
