Thanks, it does seem like a waste of money. Especially if they turn out like the one at Rodley on the L&L, as I understand it some one has had to be employed to help people through that one.

I haven"t been that way for ages (2008) but do wonder what the situation is with regards to how one leaves the bridge.
I seem to recall some of these were routinely left open. It seems this would be rather dangerous with hydraulics so the protocol may be to leave closed.
Not sure about this. Perhaps the bridges being converted have high traffic across them.

The Anderton lift is an interesting issue. Pity the National Trust wouldn't accept it as a donation ... there's a successful organisation that would be capable of preserving it for future generations. Rog Like they did with the Southern Stratford when B.W had to take it back to keep it open. Their experience of looking after canals was left short when they allowed their lockeeper to shorten the balance beams so he could drive his Land Rover down the towpath.

I'm certain N.T. wouldn't consider it, it wasn't a serious proposal.
More promoting the idea that it would be best financed as a 'stand alone' historical attraction rather than as part of the system.

Or just scrap it.
No way should licence payers who never go there pay for it.
It might be very beautiful and really clever but at the end of the day its obsolete.

It would be a bizarre situation if they end up with a useable boat lift, but no boats can navigate to it to use it.

Not forgetting the ongoing and seemingly never ending issues with a couple of the locks and bridges once you reach the Weaver. A lovely river, well worth the effort and thanks due to BW and CrT - but at what at cost in the grand scheme of things?
