From Christmas 1978 Waterways World I may well be one of the last people to pay for a ticket to traverse Rochdale Canal Summit. I lived in Smithybridge, in 1983 2 mates and I set off to Sowerby in a Canadian canoe and a kayak, I'd made folding trolleys with pram wheels, we had to portage not just round the locks but along whole dry stretches, the MSC Job Creation Scheme was doing its stuff. One of my mates was a supervisor on the scheme - got me the wellies and donkey jacket! As we got to the Summit West Lock with it's pretty lock house, still owned by Rochdale Canal Co, the little old lady lockie came out and demanded payment, maybe a 50p or something, it wasn't much, we got a couple of little tickets. The trip took 4 days, an overnight stay each way in the wood below Shaw Wood Rd, one night in a field near the end at Sowerby.

We did the Cheshire Ring in a share boat with friends around 2000 .
As the journey planner and researcher I made enquiries about the fee for using the Rochdale 9, only to discover that British Waterways had taken over management and consequently no fee was required.
I think payment ended in the late nineties.
We set off up the 9 at about 5.30am and encountered no major problems other than excess water flowing over the gates, but the locks made such an impression on Jane that she's flatly refused to do them again 😁

Did the Cheshire Ring in the mid 80's, did the nine and paid at the top. The only problem with the 9 was water over the gates at both ends making it difficult to open them. Carrying on up through Ancoats was daunting where even the hospital had wire griles over the windows. Never wished to go there again. I'm sure we paid £15.
