And so...marinas are bad. Very bad. No just soulless places. I find boats that never move quite sad. Brinklow was like a car park for boats. Some of the boaters who never ventured out of the marina did visit during the Summer, their boats seemed to have the status of a floating holiday cottage. I've heard it said that owning a narrowboat is "an expensive hobby or a cheap way to live" and I guess the people who owned the non-moving boats were relatively wealthy.

I believe the term for boaters who never leave the marina is Pond Pirates.

We only use marinas to leave the boat when having to leave it brummieboyFor our first few years we left the boat moored on line, which was fine ... until we got burgled. The excess on the two insurance policies cost £250 , which would have covered our leaving the boat in a marina so henceforth, that's what we do. I know some marinas and boat clubs have very active social sides and a community vibe, but it's just not our thing. I also would prefer, if choosing, to have an online mooring like Mr Stabby or yourself at the boat club ... much better than jammed between two boats in my view. Rog

Doh! I thought the idea of a forum was to discuss. obviously only if the respondent agrees with you. . It gets really boring starting threads when the usual suspects pop up with counter opinions for effect. So in other words I’d rather you didn’t read my posts, so please fuck off and put me on ignore. Maybe if you posted something that was a bit more uplifting rather than the continual negativity you spout, you would be a bit happierabout discussion. Perhaps your experiences with TD, your fallback relistings when you can't find anything else to moan about, have left a lasting scar . If you were to block me, then you needn't read my responses so wouldn't get so upset.

Rog The only time we've been in a Marina was after I fell down some loose moorings on the Llangollen and dislocated my shoulder. The boat was left for 4 days on line, whilst I went to hospital. We returned 3 days later to find the piling hooks bent open but someone had tied the ropes direct to the piling so still fixed. We had returned with family to move the boat to Swanley Marina anyway as we didn't fancy leaving it unattended. They were very helpful and not too unreasonable in cost. I get what you say about clubs and the socialising and we're pleased that plans at our club to dig out echelon moorings did not go ahead.

What will you do Admiral if you're required to entertain your kids back in the big city ? Would you be happy to leave Dulcinea unattended for a few days or do you have a secure (ish) mooring ? Rog

I use trains.
I can comfortably accommodate the girls on either Boat no problem.

Every night of my life is spent aboard one of the Boats.
In fact there is a plan to get another one. I want to get a terribly slummy GRP cruiser with no licence as a summer London pad.
I really missed a trick getting rid of the little Fairline. Drink tea at the Wetherspoon then just use the little Boat as a bed if needed.
I can see a plan here.

Our boat lives in a marina when we're not on it(works out that we're usually on it for about 5 to 6 months a year). We also use it as a floating cottage. We're at the front of a 'piggyback' mooring-boat behind, boat on the left of the pontoon & a boat space on the right before the next right hand boat.If we lived on it,we'd probably want somewhere more open.First mooring(12 years) was at the top of the Titford flight in Oldbury, but that became really noisy due to an aluminium recycling place which opened & worked all hours. We then moved to Norbury on the old Newport locks line, problem there was that they'd fill the arm with boats & you'd have to arrange boats to be moved to let us out/back in.We then moved to Overwater where our boat is well looked after(Covid care was excellent).Never thought we'd like a marina, but as a safe place-it cannot be faulted.

I can actually understand the need for security if your not on the boat.
