How do you do it ?
I turned the boat yesterday and shipped a splash of water, so I need to re seal the hatch.
Checked today after cruising and doing three locks and all dry, so my guess is it is reverse kicking a little water in.
Obviously I've been doing the sealing for twenty years, but perhaps there's a better way.

You just need to replace the tape every so often - when did you last replace the tape?

Use a scraper to get the worst of the old tape off the top plate and edges of the top of the weed hatch.
Grind all the rest of the crap off until you reach bare metal.
Coat with rust prevention
Leave for two days to harden
Paint over the rust protection with a good paint of your choice
leave for two days to dry
Stick new tape on
Should only take a week to complete.

Those blue camping mats are good because one can cut a single piece gasket out and clamp it down. No gaps.

Why do you?
I'm feeling a little nonplussed as I don't think I have ever done this.
What am I missing?

The seal tape breaks down over time metanoia and needs replacing. If it ain't broke don't fix it obviously. I usually put tape on and cut at roughly 45 degree angles but I wondered if I'm missing a trick that's all. If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got ... so I asked 😊 Rog

Square corners, the joint line is shorter and easier to cut correctly.

Changed the seal and trying square ends ... we'll see ... certainly easier and quicker.

Camping mats. One can just cut it out from a single piece. If the surfaces are clean there is no need or use for adhesives.
