It was you who introduced the crowdjustice funding appeal by this " coalition of boat dwellers, the National Bargee Travellers Association and other support organisations" onto Thunderboat originally, . . on 2 April this year, . . and you provided a link straight to the crowdjustice funding page. I reckon that, at the very least, you owe those who took what you said in good faith, and contributed to the appeal, an explanation of why their money was spent so ineffectually, . . precisely who spent it so ineffectually, . . and why, whoever they are, they're still holding their hands out for yet more cash, . . six weeks after stating that the appeal had been "paused". Dunkley, you’re a complete fuckin idiot who has done nothing other than lose two boats, with a third being in the pipeline. For this reason, any opinion you have is nothing more than rambling from an idiot. Idiot. Your ill-informed claptrap is of no interest to anyone other than those stupid and naive enough to lend any credibility to anything that anyone with a track record such as yours might say, . . so instead of trying to bluster your way out of the corner you've put yourself into -- address the issue at hand. It was YOU who introduced the crowdjustice funding appeal by this " coalition of boat dwellers, the National Bargee Travellers Association and other support organisations" onto Thunderboat originally, . . on 2 April this year, . . and YOU who provided the link straight to the crowdjustice funding page. Somebody had a go at taking on CRT and it didn't get the response they required? You should join them Tony, be right up your street. He’s fallen out with the people involved. Other than the NBTA, who for obvious reasons are well known to many thousands of pleasure boaters, . . I don't know who 'the people involved' are, . . but in stating - quote - "He’s fallen out with the people involved." - you've made it very apparent that YOU DO KNOW who they are ! So, . . identify these mysterious people who YOU say I have "fallen out with", and who hide behind a description of themselves as a " coalition of boat dwellers, the National Bargee Travellers Association and other support organisations" ? Is the fact that they're still inviting donations some 6 weeks after saying that the appeal had been "paused" connected in any way with their continuing anonymity ?

Sounds like libel to me dunkers.. That's because you don't understand what constitutes libel ! Try spending a few moments reading up on it, . . as a more constructive alternative to parading your ignorance on the internet.

Anyone remember this from 2 April this year, . . missed its intended publishing deadline by one day, . . perhaps : -- < www.crowdjustice.com/case/protect-boats-homes/ > This latest 'update' on the crowdjustice website - number 9 from 19 September 2021 - would be more accurately described as an admission that this latest application for Judicial Review of C&RT's extra-statutory Licence T&C's is effectively over before it ever got started for precisely the same reasons that the previous application for JR of C&RT's attempts to re-write statute failed at first hearing on 19 February 2014, when the presiding Judge held that in the absence of any current Licence T&C's enforcement proceedings before any Court, that "it would be very difficult for the Court to adjudicate the matter in the abstract." I should have mentioned that despite "Update No. 9" stating that the funding appeal had been "paused" from 19 September 2021, . . it was in fact renewed this morning on the crowdjustice webpage with another 30 days to run.

Here it is in full : - Update 9 -19 September 2021 (to be read bending over forward with legs suitably spaced apart) : -- "We are extremely grateful to all the supporters who have made donations to this appeal. There has not been very much to report since the last update at the end of June. The appeal has been paused and may be wound up soon. This will not prevent us opening another appeal to continue the case if we believe this is necessary and appropriate. We have used the remainder of the funds to seek further advice from a senior Barrister regarding Canal & River Trust’s (CRT) response to our second Pre-Action Protocol letter.
Our lawyers Community Law Partnership have also written to CRT asking why it has not implemented its decision to revert to the previous wording of Clause 5.4 in the new terms and Conditions (previously Clause 4.1 in the 2020 version).
We believe that we have reached the limit of what this legal challenge can achieve without an individual claimant who can be added to the case. This is because CRT has made it clear that it will demand the appointment of an individual as an additional claimant as a condition of permission being granted to bring a Judicial Review of the changes to the Boat Licence Terms and Conditions. We are therefore seeking an individual boat dweller (who is eligible for Legal Aid so on a low income) who is willing and able to take on this role.
If you think you might be able to do this, or know someone who may, please contact our lawyers on their Travellers Advice Line 0121 685 8677 (open Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm). Thank you!"

Chronometers aren't instruments for mundane everyday time keeping. Their primary, and strictly speaking only proper function, is or rather was, to carry 'Greenwich Time' onboard a vessel at sea anywhere in the world in order to determine the vessel's longitude by the difference between the ship's own time - Noon - when the Sun is at its highest and the time at Greenwich. Every 4 minutes difference in the two equals one degree of longitude East or West of the Greenwich Meridian. There's no such thing as a 'Rivers only Licence', . . it's purely a figment of C&RT's corporate warped imagination. I know, I read the book about Harrison. Now superseded by a £5 timex. As for the ROL for your shoes..... Hook line and sinker. Chortle. You didn't read "the book about Harrison" well enough. He didn't ever make any chronometers, . . that was down to others, many years later, . . a progression from Harrison's 'lesser' watch, and his preceding enormous 'timepieces', or clocks. Did you really think my answer about the 'Rivers only Licence' was to be taken seriously ? Chortle, chortle !

There are many things you have to keep a constant check on for the purposes of tidal river and estuary pilotage, . . but Longitude isn't one of them. I won't be taking up your offer of the loan of the stilts, . . the rumour you've heard IS true ! Who mentioned longitude. I was suggesting logging the time against tide height, so it could be translated into time after high water or whatever. Surprised you didn't understand that. Be careful where you walk on water btw, you'll need a rivers only licence for each shoe. Chronometers aren't instruments for mundane everyday time keeping. Can you post photos on Thunderboat? If so any chance of a photo of the gland so we can have a look. Something you said about the nuts makes me suspect no adjustment was done but lock nuts may have been loose but I would prefer to see exactly what you have got. He removed the bronze outside nuts from the bolts, and showed me tightening the inners, quarter turn at a time, I could see most of it, and he put the outer nuts on, also turned the prop shaft, so it was a demo of the method. Ive never tried photos, I have a phone, and a tablet, will try...... I'll be honest, I thought the flanges were too close together and lots of bolt exposed. I'll try to get measurements, but still, if it was that obvious why would he not sort it, I don't have any materials or an extracting tool, but he must have, he's a registered dealer, not just any old mechanic, so must have plenty experience replacing worn engines etc. I think there is some chatter from the prop, and I mentioned it to him, he said its probably stuff round the prop and to look in weed hatch. I will do that when I feel up to it. There is plenty of rubbish, logs etc in the canal, I tend to keep my hand on the throttle and knock it out of gear if I hear something, then apply astern if the water is clean, sometimes bits appear out the back, I'm not sure how much more I can do, to be honest, the amount of hassle per linear mile is just ridiculous. I've sort of had to ignore things for a few days as I needed to actually move the boat! Obviously Mr Boatyard does not want to know, I think I'll have to sort this myself, I hope I don't sink the boat. The only boatyard I could try is a hire place, but I can't get the boat there, did I mention the canal is closed to thru navigation till Easter? Is what you call "chatter" from the prop a sound or is it actually a light vibration ? If it's a light, slightly muffled tinkling sound then you've almost certainly picked up some fencing wire on it, . . a more common occurrence on rural lengths of canal than in urban areas, due to cattle trampling fences down to get to the water's edge to drink. The wire itself makes a negligible difference to propulsive efficiency, . . but it does tend to make the prop more prone to picking up and retaining other stuff that it would normally throw off quite easily if the wire wasn't there. Before you move the boat again it would be as well to check the prop for any wire or anything similar -- such as the metal banding strip that's put round palleted items -- and if there is any of it tangled round the tail shaft and the blades, get rid of every last bit of it. Getting some photo's of the stuffing box and tailshaft, as tonyb has said, would be very useful, . . but in the meantime you should find that you can slow the leakage from the stern gland a bit more effectively with grease if, instead of turning the greaser with everything stopped, you give the greaser a couple of turns with the engine idling in ahead gear immediately before shifting to neutral -- doing that spreads the grease round inside the stuffing box and bearing more effectively than with everything stationary.

Having spoken with Mayors' Yard yesterday, it's quite apparent that although decisions relating to the day to day operation of the lock remain with them, as it's always been in living memory and beyond, the C&RT's purely arbitrary edicts as to whether or not the so-called 'Ribble Link' itself is open to navigation do take ultimate precedence over any practical or operational considerations over tide times, lock operation, and river or weather conditions. In stark contrast with the data and info I already had from long ago, from both before and after Preston Docks closed to commercial shipping, or current operational data and info from other local sources, . . no information as to channel depths, widths or markings, or drying areas from Tarleton to the area around Asland Light was forthcoming from Mayors, . . or any information regarding suitable lay-over spots or anchorages between Tarleton and Preston to sit out the LW period. Time to make a crossing with a chronometer and a lead line then, the boating world will be grateful for your efforts. Get a boat or I could lend you a pair of stilts. Or is the rumour that you can walk on water true? There are many things you have to keep a constant check on for the purposes of tidal river and estuary pilotage, . . but Longitude isn't one of them. Have C&RT contacted you with an offer of an FOC lift out and transportation to another location of your choice ? As things stand at present, it looks as if you're going to be marooned in the 30 or so miles of canal between the bust culvert near Rishton and the stoppage near Gargrave until at least Easter next year. Funnily enough CRT have not offered free transportation, IMHO that would be ridiculous expense, and a part refund of licence fee would set a precedent, leading to general outrage. I have always had water under the keel, and after a few weeks I have been able to turn 180 and backtrack. I fancy no one is patrolling and spotting non movers, but tbh that's never been my worry, the CRT did not phone me this week, so they must be confident I am not in difficulties. I am currently at their regional office, sitting on the water point! In the last three weeks I have seen one little yoghurt pot moving, and one nb out on the cut, its very Marie Celeste. I understood from several earlier posts in this thread that you were to the East of the bust culvert between Rishton and Church, . . but if you're now tied-up near C&RT's Regional Office then you must be in Wigan, and must have in fact been to the West of the bust culvert. If you are in fact in Wigan, . . then there's nothing to prevent you from reverting to your original plan to get up onto the Lancaster Canal by Christmas.

The main, and most significant being that the Blisworth closure didn't trap any boats in a 30 mile length of canal, . . and, unlike C&RT's current stance with regard to the legal status of boat Licences, BWB did NOT claim that Pleasure Boat Licences were a form of annually renewable 'contract', . . which, of course, there are inevitably two sides to !

The only reason for C&RT making tides a deciding factor in whether or not the trip from Tarleton to the Link and back is feasible. I presume Tony… That you do know that Roger and the lads at Mayors Yard Tarleton ( who ultimately have forgotten more about Ribble tides and crossings than than you will ever know!) have ultimate decision upon boats crossing the link & their decision has jack squit to do with CRT? Having spoken with Mayors' Yard yesterday, it's quite apparent that although decisions relating to the day to day operation of the lock remain with them, as it's always been in living memory and beyond, the C&RT's purely arbitrary edicts as to whether or not the so-called 'Ribble Link' itself is open to navigation do take ultimate precedence over any practical or operational considerations over tide times, lock operation, and river or weather conditions.
