Even if the calorifier isn't filling, due to an airlock, the pump should still stop eventually. May take 10 minutes or so, though. I assume at least one hot tap is open?

Thanks Iain, I was wary about keeping it going for so long, I will persist a bit longer and see what happens. If water comes out of the hot tap, why do you think the calorifier is empty? It isn't empty, but it isn't filling completely, lots of gurgling noises that bleeding the calorifier isn't sorting out and when I tap the side it sounds half empty whereas before we took the pump off it sounded full. From previous comments I am probably not giving it enough time but with all the leaking problems we have had I am just a little bit nervous right now!

The pump's motor will get hot after 15 minutes so please monitor and let it cool down once you can't keep your hand on it for ten seconds. Is the pump actually pumping?

I will do so, I need to wait until I get home from work. I believe it is pumping, it is only a temporary fix though as I have ordered a new pump. I am so hoping this is the end of this problem. It will be refreshing to move onto another one lol.

The 'gurgling' makes me wonder if it is pumping air, ie there is a leak on the suction side of the pump or on the pump itself? Good luck tonight. At least you are learning stuff you will never forget! You'll be positively smug next time, when you fix it quickly.

I am definitely glad that I have ordered a new pump - I am getting less and less confident about the 'refurb' of the old one lol. Unfortunately I suspect next time will be another problem altogether, that is the way it always seems to happen!

It will be refreshing to move onto another one lol. If there's water coming out of a hot tap, apart from the initial pipe-full, then the pump has filled up the calorifier, completely in the case of a vertical one, probably leaving an air space if it's a horizontal one. Any air left in a horizontal one shouldn't effect the water flow, and will very gradually disappear over time by dissolving in the water. If the main symptom is a persistent gurgling, though, then, as others have said, it's likely that air is getting sucked into the system before or at the pump. Does it gurgle if a cold water tap is open?

OK, all seems to be working ok at the moment, refurbed pump is working as hoped and no signs of any leaks around it at present. Gurgles didn't happen last night so maybe the system sorted itself out a bit whilst I was at work not looking at it! I will replace the pump with the new one when it arrives and keep a close eye on things to see if there are any other leaks in the system. It was nice being able to sleep last night without worrying quite so much Thanks for all the help and advice, I wish I had asked earlier to be honest

They went away after I ran all the taps one at a time which spat any trapped air out.

Hopefully final update!
With lots of thanks to everyone here I now have a new water pump under the bed, an auto bilge pump and a brand spanking new wet and dry vac. As a result I am really struggling to walk on a boat that doesn't lean over so dramatically! I am hoping that it remains that way but for now I am loving looking at a reasonably flat boat now - I just need to put a new fire in the front to bring that down a bit and then sit back and relax - or sort out whatever goes wrong next lol.
She still sits a few inches higher in the water than my husbands boat so I am wondering about putting more ballast in to get her just right. Alternatively I might just continue to keep looking down on him whilst cruising.........
I do love living on a boat!!
