Working near Shrewsbury tomorrow, so came down with caravan today. As we got about a mile from the site we crossed over a disused canal (A483). Caravan site woman says its the Montgomery, unusual in that it goes downhill from both sides into a dip. Too wet and soggy to go look-see today.

'Churlish' if you want to be churlish I have the O.S. 1:50 000 Shrewsbury & Oswestry map (No.126) here, and that's where you'll find the Montgomery Canal, at least the open stretch between Frankton Junction and Queen's Head / Maesbury Marsh. We went on the Chirk - Shrewsbury train twice at Christmas and spotted the canal both times from the railway. 9th photo down on this page: www.montgomerycanal.me.uk/newtown.html

Went for a stroll yesterday morning, here's some pics of a lock and lock house. There's a disused arm starts to the right of the lock. There appears to be some features unique to the Monty, the ground paddle gear and plate in front of the cill. The lock must be 75 or 76 ft long to fit a boat in after the plate. strange gubbins down in front of the cill, I suspect its a baffle to slow the ground paddle water down and stop the boat surging about. ground paddle gear, an arm and quadrant. not sure whats goiung on below, a flat plate moving away from the hole?

The top 7 miles, from Frankton junction (Llangollen canal) is in water.
There's a gap, and then the bottom end, which I guess is where you are, is also in water.
The whole was supposed to be navigable again by now I believe, but progress is very slow (as these things are).
The photos are great thanks.

Why does it take so long to get disused canals restored? It should be a priority. How about getting the Army to do it?

Canal culverted under roads. Several on the A483, a major trunk road. I noticed the canal as we approached Ardleen on the A483 , where the navigable bit starts again, there were 3 culverts within 1/2 a mile. Maybe a dozen in total from Maesbury, plus a 3 mile dry section. All of the bits in water are marked as navigable by portable boat. In sum, there would be major chaos lifting all the roads. But who cares, go for it anyway, they are all Welsh anyway. 😂😂

My personal lockie is intruiged. She wants to know if there is a coin slot, if it spits out eggs and grinds flour for you as you lock up! I have taken her drinking vessel off her.
Thanks for the photo's lovely.

Thanks for the photo's lovely. It's a pleasure swee'pea! As for what the paddle gear does, not a clue, other than let water through. Foxy has done the first bit from the Llangollen, is it the same gear there?

No, the seven mile top stretch are pretty much normal narrow locks, with a staircase to start you off.

In this case it is because of the interference of Natural England (or some other similar bollocks organisation) who bog things down by protecting Great Crested Newts and such like, forgetting what canals were originally for. As an aside we are now becoming over run by the rare Great Crested Newt.

The Witch says they're standard mechanisms along the Llangollen. I don't get to see the winding gear much as she refuses to drive the boat into locks as "it's scary down there".
