Well, now I am at lock 15E on the HNC. Very pretty canal, some of the pounds are very short of water, I've been bouncing along the bottom for a lot of it. I'm with another boater who is booked at Standedge Tunnel on the same day as me, and he only has a 1' 10" draught (mine is 2' 3") so he's been going ahead and running water down as needed, other pounds higher up are full to overflowing so where the water is going is a bit of a mystery. There is one pound there which is always nearlly empty and you need to to run water down. Anyway, I thought we might bump into you on the way up the T&M from the Caldon but we are already on the Llangolan now. Not too busy for a bank holiday either. Only 5 in the queue this morning... Sorry to have missed you, I'm going to do the Caldon on my way back too. The thing to do on the Llangollen I found was to go on the opposite cycle to the hire boats, i.e. aim to get to Llangollen at the weekend when the hire boats are changing over back at base.

I agree, and one thing I've said more than once is that the northern canals I've been on over the last few weeks are just a little too quiet for me, I do like having a chat with folk at locks or wherever. However, on the Llangollen it was good to see that the queue of boats was always going in the other direction.

Slaithwaite: Handmade Bakery open Sundays 0930-1630, Little Bridge Cafe open Sundays 1000-midnight. Both good.

Just a quick heads-up, lock 24E on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal has to be booked, I didn't know this and neither did the boater travelling with me, but we were fortunate enough to meet another boater at Slaithwaite who had booked it, and who told the lockies that two other boats were following.

We just let water down. Was that bad? :/ Edited to say, ah hang on, is that the guillotine lock? You do need CRT to operate that...

Stuck at lock 32E now, with no water to run down, the CRT bods we spoke to yesterday were planning to fill the canal from the reservoir today, although that looks almost empty too.

That 24E guillotine lock was OK in June 2015. Last July (2016) we heard at the Standedge Tunnel office that it needed to be arranged in advance and we went through with another boat. So, almost a year has passed and CRT still haven't repaired it? Here it is: just goes to show, a sharp knife is more reliable than a guillotine

Have you tried consuming copious amounts of beer then peeing in the pound?
