I have not been about for ages due the boat, but then what would we do with out them Reason this time is this new toy, not exactly boat related but then it is as this is a Reads Sailmaker and is used by well sailors so that bit is boaty related. Not bad nick for a early 70`s machine. Had it going through 8 layers of 650grm canvas but not the Top Gun canvas i will be using. The reason for this is i will be making my own canopy and curtains cushions etc for the boat. Looking forward to it really, aswell as saving well over £1k for the canopy, the canvas will cost around £170 so no big deal if i mess up the job. Biggest job will be making the pattern but i am working on it and will be practicing on making a trailer cover and few bits to get the knack. A few samples of my last nights attemps top bottom not sure if they are ok but time will tell while i work it out, only had it a day

That looks a proper piece of kit, just the job for stitching up a new canopy! Your first attempts look pretty good to me, I've not used a sewing machine since middle school in the 70's😆

Not to hard Patty, bit of a faff at first to get the tension right. Had to make a spool holder aswell as i ddint know the V69 thread had to come from the top not the side To tight to buy one lol It is a good bit of kit Larkboy, i love it. Got bits n bobs that i have no clue what they are for. Its the skill bit i am worried about Martin, well not worried but you know, making the patterns for the canopy. Unpicking all that thread Rapped my fingers a fw times at first, but hten i never do a job with out injust, even a sewing machine.

If those stitches are through 8 layers of canvas, then I'm also well impressed too. Dad bought me a lovely Singer contained within a fashionable cabinet (well it was fashionable back in the 70's when he bought it)and although I never became the seamstress I think he wished me to be, I did manage some shifts, aprons and skirts as well as numerous cushion covers. All the best of luck with your new undertaking/hobby

All the best of luck with your new undertaking/hobby Tracey`s new cheap machine went through 4 layers of canvas but struggled with much more and would of probably melted on a good long stitch. Old machines i believe are the best for doing this kind of work. I looked at all sorts like the Singers etc, dont know what it is but these old machines look great. A chap was lucky to find me this one at a good price om Preloved for £75 , and there was me in looking to spend nearer £200. Well Patty, time will tell if i have the skill needed. This machine has no walking foot but it pulls the canvas through so easy, so all i need to do is guide it, where i am also using a magnet along side the foot to run the material along as you do with a guide on a circular saw and such tool. I have a lead foot so before i know it i am sewing a pattern of the snake pass lol.

I have a singer industrial machine stashed away. It does one simple stitch but will go through anything. But it doesn't have a walking foot which is a must for thick or lots of layers, leather, vinyl, stuff with wadding... Someone has probably said already, but if sewing leather or vinyl type material make sure the bottom reel won't run out or just made a "tear along dotted line".

I have been told a walking foot is not needed and the add ons are not much good for thicker materials. All it does is make thing easier as saving pulling the material through. On that though this Reads doesnt have one and it pulls the 8 layers of canvas with no problem. No need to help it through, could be the pressure from the foot, i dont know but it does a great job. I`ll try and and do a vid of it working

I hate sewing machines but your picture of the stitches looks pretty good to me I've always preferred sewing by hand with needle and thread but its very time consuming to be fair.

I thought I'd be teaching granny. I'm jealous of your machine but you'd be jealous of my 3kw clutch motor.
