You are of course correct. But you need the right tools, and parts. Then you need the confidence. Got me there Rog I had a business designing mobile phone transmission sites after teaching myself autocad and getting a lucky break. Too much sitting at a computer made me a bit ill so I rebuilt an engine (didn't have a clue what was inside an engine when I started), taught myself to mig weld, restored a vw camper, then other people's for a decade, built more engines, learned to spray paint by pestering someone, then stopped everything when my marriage broke up a few years ago. It's narrowboats now lol, In 15 months I've pretty well done everything spread over two boats except for engines but if it broke I wouldn't even care, I'd take it to bits, see what was wrong and mend it. That all sounds great - except for the marriage breakup of course. Well done for biting the bullet and "just doing it"! A man after my own heart.

Any Idea why mine won't fire up? I fitted 2x new 110ah batteries yesterday hoping that would help. It worked great the first few times I tried, though one time (I started a thread) it sort of whoomfed slightly but continually. Next time it was fine, now it won't light. It goes through the start sequence as it should, there's no air in system, I haven't "done anything" that could effect it since it worked. Looking at the manual it seems like to get at the glow plug I have to disassemble it starting opposite end which could be annoying. It's a thermo top c with no fault code lights. Grr.

Have you measured the voltage at the glowplug when starting? If its more than a very few 10ths of a volt less than battery voltage it points to a poor connection or undersized wiring.
Is it a proper marine unit or an Ebay automotive bargain? I understand the firmware is different.

I have a mikuni. Sorry, no experience of Webastos. But generally, if there is white smoke it's a glowplug or voltage issue. If there's no smoke it's a fuel issue.

You, Gazza, johnv and Faffer are my heros. I wish I had the aptitude. Rog I don't trust anyone to do"it" properly and my father is a penny pinching Scot. 👍 If it wasn't for people like you there couldn't be people like me. I have the same problem thats why I do everything myself, having repaired so many other garages bodges I dont understand why anybody goes to them!! Over the years I have seen them all cills glued on with sicoflex old head gaskets put back on with hermatite etc etc scares me. I am glad I sold the garage and could easily make a living repairing boats for others but that for me then spoils my hobby so all I do now is give a helping hand and give them advice works for me

I'll give that a go, but the batteries are on a 120a charger plugged in to shore power which I'd have thought would have the same effect and it did fire up immediately the first few times I tried it. I'll also try it without the air filter. After that it'll have to come apart.

I guess I've ruled out voltage and they are meant to work down to 10.5v! It's under the rear deck and the weather is a bit iffy.

You have never seen wiring like it in your life!! these are professional boat fitters and repairers I wouldnt have trusted them to tie my shoelaces!! I fired the webasto up to sell it, the bathtub revamp will include a whispergen and underfloor heating with all surfaces insulated to try and keep some heat in. I am going to run some channels under the gunwales for the wiring and through a channel in the roof for the lights. The old wiring was everywhere no rhyme or reason to it at all

Are you moving the whispergen from the barge or is it still possible to get hold of them?
Or maybe you have two already.
I think they stopped making them at some point something to do with a storm or something ?

The "Bathtub" !!! Now that is a serious work in progress !!!
Was very impressed by what I saw and the plans Peter explained to me ...... but boy was it a heap of poo the way it had been done originally !!!
(was particularly impressed by the Lynch motor and reduction gear ...... incredibly compact for the power produced)

Bidspotter is your friend, I bought 3 of them earlier this year all brand new for £475 each sold 2 kept one 24 volt version for the bathtub as it will be all electric and 24 volts. As a charger its ok as a central heating boiler its ok both together its brilliant uses same diesel as a webasto and charges the batteries does it get better?

Engine running and air filter removed didn't help, I didn't think it would but was easy to try, so... Now I have to find my star screwdrivers, they don't get used very often.

I have ordered the stove as well so things are moving forward....................slowly
