Yes, yes yes, I bought a stupid boat with almost no insulation, no damp membrane, an interior held together with glue and a nail gun etc etc.
Next thing - it's trying to kill us with CO.
I thought it might be the solid fuel stove which isn't the greatest thing but it turns out it's the cooker which is a full size thing. I did specifically ask the previous owner if it had been converted to run on propane and he said it had.
Experimentation yesterday evening results: Oven is fine. Small and 2x medium hob burners fine. Grill pretty quickly gets CO alarm up to 12-14ppm. Large burner has the ppm showing 28ppm after just a few minutes.
These tests all done with the hopper window above the cooker open.
After switching off, even with the side hatch wide open it takes 15-20 minutes for levels to drop back to 0ppm.
The obvious short term answer is buy an electric toaster and stop using the large hob burner as both these parts burn a heck of a lot of gas and it could be as simple as that?
Generally though it might be possible to alter the jet size for the big hob burner (great for fry ups!)?
My initial guess is it's the same theory as jetting carburettor in which case I imagine it's running a bit rich and so perhaps down a jet size might help?
Bloody boat!

Just add, it does have the recommended lpg jet size in the large burner.

Here's the (to me) weird grill, it just does this and never seems to glow red as grills of yesteryear. And with flash...

So.... err... when was the BSS and how did it get a BSS certificate? Who was the BSS chappie? Is there a guarantee from the seller - up to him to pay for this kind of correction? What make & model of cooker, how old? My first thought is to rip it to pieces and blast the jets with air, or get new parts. Yellow flames? Or avoid the fry-ups and save yourself a heart attack. Failing all this, London Boaters Facebook page is great for advice. Ah yes, the predictable Foxy response - look for somebody to blame, you remind me of my ex-wife. No, I want to simply fix it and not die of CO poisoning.

Failing all this, London Boaters Facebook page is great for advice. And of course with the BSS certificate, you're having a laugh, have you ever had one done? I have. I was asked if it had a bubble tester, one fire extinguisher checked for date and pressure, flexible diesel pipe checked for a kite mark, ventilation glanced at. That was it. Having said that, the boat was in obviously fine fettle. Not this boat! This has a quite recent BSSC, probably acquired after a similar "inspection". A mate down the way simply removed all his gas and other dodgy stuff, his test took max 2 minutes after which he put it all back.

Our BSS man had all the gas of the cooker on all at once - 4 rings/hobs, the oven and the grill. I hadn't seen it like that before, a flaming inferno - and the water heater Morco was on too, that's our maximum output. He said that the cooker company had recommended that the rubber gas hose behind the cooker be replaced by copper pipe, and we had that done, as it could be too close to the grill and oven at the back - and anyway, as we didn't know how old the rubber pipe was, why not get rid of it?
Removal of all gas jet components and blasting them with air? Soaking in a solvent beforehand? Or can they be blasted with air in situ? Invest in another CO alarm also? But anyway, when you are using the grill or the main hob, you're likely to be awake whilst cooking, eh? Hardly likely to suddenly succumb and collapse, especially if you have the doors and windows open.
An emergency measure is to buy a Camping Gaz propane stove (small cartridge), or a Trangia which burns meths.
Surely there's a 'gas man' at your marina who has seen this a hundred times before?
Worst scenario brand new cooker? (not one Made in China!)

Yes, thanks, very helpful but I've done all those obvious things as luckily I'm not a complete mong head. π
Close inspection shows the buner isn't level due to the part inside that pokes through which everything sits on being out of kilter. This means that the gap for the combustion air is almost closed one side but large on the opposite side. Perhaps that's the answer, it's a big burner so maybe not getting enough air one side and too much the other. However the flame itself is even all round and loiks like it should so I'm probably clutching at straws.
Yes Foxy, just cooking so I am awake but the level stays high for a long time after if I don't open the hatch. CO builds up in your body and I've had a stomach ache for days which made me wonder as it's the same kind of stomach ache I also get if I accidentally smoke 1,000 ciggies in one day.

Gas cookers do produce a bit of CO. A hot flame playing on a cooler saucepan, for example, results in some CO. This is one reason why cookers should not be used as space heaters, and CO Alarms shouldnβt be adjacent. So itβs just a matter of degree. If the CO alarm is being activate when itβs not close to the cooker, that is too much CO. As suggested, too much CO is because there isnβt enough combustion air, quite possibly blocked air jets. Itβs hard to see the grill flame colour, is it all blue or is there some orange?

Never mind about the CO - I'm amazed no-one has suggested "mr Muscle Oven and grill cleaner" ;-) FPMSL.... I have a lifelong pal who's a closet poofter, won't come out due to being the sole heir to a farming dynasty etc, he's a great guy, done the false marriage shite that lasted months etc etc, just won't/can't come out!! Thats the the first thing he would of commented, he spends the first day 'spick & spanning' when he comes on the boat!! OCD seems to be the plague of the gays yes?

is this technical thread going to be sabotaged by the gay community?............. it won't be the first time. .............why is it necessary? ... us straight guys don't turn threads into hetero orgies (well, not very often ) .............. I can't see what one's sexuality has to do with gas jets, but maybe I'm missing something.

I take it you've never bent a ginger beer over a gas cooker after 15 Tomahawk shots ? if you had, the CO levels would of been your first priority ...allegedly!! ( according to my friend! )

Never mind about the CO - I'm amazed no-one has suggested "mr Muscle Oven and grill cleaner" ;-) You should see the oven! The glass door is so cacked up my lad didn't realise it was glass. But yesterday I sent out for a can of poundland fake Mr Muscle which duly arrived last night (love my neighbours ).
