Particularly this bit. It's difficult to give details about meeting to view because ebay would ban me from sending messages if they spotted it.
eBay cannot do anything to prevent a potential buyer viewing an item before they purchase. I have done this a couple of times on expensive/high value items such as cameras/vehicles. they have recently clamped down on people messaging their phone numbers to buyers. To stop sales outside of ebay, hence you see people who post photos of their phone numbers. Interesting I hadn't spotted that but a quick check confirms their messaging system indeed now picks up any attempt to send a phone number or email addy, so I wont be buying or selling anything high value on there again - their loss I guess.

Iām not an ebay expert but I thought it was always very advisable to pay only via the ebay system. The seller is asking for a bank transfer etc, which as I understand it has no come-back via ebay if things go wrong. He is suggesting that the boat cannot be viewed until Saturday and that it will probably be sold before then, enticing you to buy it before you view it. How do you know that he actually owns the boat and/or will transfer the ownership to you? If one was going to do a scam, surely this is how you would do it? Correct. What limited protection you do get only comes from using eBay/Paypal. Though there is from memory restrictions on single transaction amounts even on verified PayPal accounts. ISTR that Paypal protection doesn't apply to cars or boats.

I can't understand how anybody would be willing to spend thousands on a boat (or anything else for that matter) without seeing it in the flesh, or that eBay believe anybody would be willing to, it's just mad. They are set to lose by such a draconian policy because people will just use alternatives like Facebook or Gumtree to sell high value stuff or simply revert to traditional methods such as classifieds.

As a buyer one would be protected when buying a boat (but not a vehicle. ) www.paypal.com/uk/selfhelp/article/what-items-are-not-covered-under-buyer-protection-faq1902

I am looking to spend around Ā£20,000. My house is sold and have the money waiting, it's not a big budget but it's what I have to spend. The main thing is the hull, engine and gear box has to all be good as the inside/outside I can work on. It has to be big enough to live on aswell. I have been looking now for a few months and have visited boat yards to look at what type I want to get a better idea, I prefer trad or semi trad and a multi fuel stove with a back boiler if poss. Solar would be nice but have priced all that up myself for a total system that I would install myself so it would just be a bonus if it was already done. I have a big wish list with a small budget as you can see, so any help would be good & thank you all for your reply's. Rob

But surely one can still arrange a viewing via the ebay messaging system? Private phone numbers and email addresses are not required to do that.

You would think so but they allegedly have 'bots' that the messages are automatically run through to detect what they consider to be any attempt to arrange to meet. I suppose it would still be possible to structure a message in a way that defeats that though.

They are having a giraffe..... i suppose they think they have an unassailable position in the market so can dictate to the users what they will allow.
