Perhaps I should bring some of this over, got a big box full of it: in raw form, though, chunks of rock - you have to search for the crystals in it and dig them out. Spectrolite, from Ylämaa, south-east Finland. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrolite It's Finland's most expensive building stone (you can see it at Liverpool Street station. Ever wondered why train tickets are so expensive??!!)

Ever wondered why train tickets are so expensive??!!) That is beautiful, does it come in small pieces? I have a box of rocks maybe 20cm x 20cm - picked up from one of the quarries, in fact the quarry in which I did 2 days "work experience" drilling holes and stuffing them with explosives. That was in 1998. I got permission from the quarry/land owner to go and take some specimens maybe 9 years ago. The rock is laced with these hexagonal (6-sided) crystals with striated colours. I've made a note to check what I have when I can, and to have a look at my notes. As I recall, the stone is an anorthosite gabbro (a basic igneous rock), and it is full of tiny fractures. There are two quarries in Ylämaa, at least, the one I was at produces Spectrolite as a building stone. In Ylämaa village there are numerous workshops/jewellers with all kinds of Spectrolite earrings, pendants and other assorted bawbles for sale. I'll see about getting on to this today/tomorrow. If you'd like the box, you're welcome to it, I've been wondering what I should do with it. I bet there's hardly anyone in the UK with raw Spectrolite. You'd need cutting tools to hunt for the crystals (they're everywhere, wet the surface and they show up). Aiming to drive our car to the UK next June 2019, so could carry these rocks too...

Glaciers may have carried pieces from the bedrock, so you might be able to find this stuff south of Finland (?) - but I'm betting the only place you'll be able to pick this up is from the floor of the quarry, where it's all over the place. A milder form of 'Spectrolite' occurs in central Finland (Mäntyharju as I remember) and western Finland (Säkylä as I remember). It's a relation to the syenite 'Larvikite' from southern Norway which is to be found cladding many buildings in the UK/all over the world. I believe Baxters the butcher used this (Larvikite) outside their shops. Spectrolite polished Spectrolite in raw rock

It appears to be related to Labradorite, which I have used to make 'Im Indoors some cufflinks. I'm currently "watching" a rock polisher on Ebay because I want to tumble some glass to resemble sea glass which looks good as jewellery but is not reasy to come by and is rarely the sort of shape you want! I will of course NOT be passing it off as genuine sea glass! Though I am told if you put this tumbled glass in a bag and leave it in the sea for an hour it can then be called sea glass, that's cheating methinks.
If you do bring some over I would be very interested Foxy, I would of course cover postage or arrange to collect it. Thanks, you are very kind.

The house i lived in in Caldecott i put all the stones in a wall ..a future geologist will have a time working that one out. Next place I get I will do the same..

Well, thank you all for your kind words. I’m enjoying the craft, I’m thinking about a matching necklace for the shell cuff next.

If you do bring some over I would be very interested... Finally got round to digging the box out of our boathouse... about to weigh the pieces now... this is what there is. Will attempt to wet the surfaces and take some pics of visible crystals. Probably time to post those this evening... Wine bottle for scale (wine not included!)
